NGC 3142 is a barred spiral galaxy of the Hubble type S0 in the constellation Sextant in the southern sky . It is an estimated 234 million light years away from the Milky Way and about 70,000 light years in diameter.
The object was discovered by John Herschel on May 5, 1836 .
