NGC 3145 is a bar-spiral galaxy of the Hubble-type SBbc in the constellation Water Snake south of the celestial equator . It is estimated to be 155 million light years from the Milky Way and about 140,000 light years in diameter. Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with NGC 3143 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 3133 , NGC 3138 , NGC 3139 .
The object was discovered on March 19, 1786 by the astronomer Wilhelm Herschel with a 48 cm telescope.
