St. Mary of the Assumption (Rees)
The Church of St. Mary of the Assumption is the Catholic parish church in downtown Rees . It is a rare example of classical church architecture on the Lower Rhine .
The church is visible from afar, surrounded by residential and commercial buildings in the city center, near the market.
The classical style determines the interior and exterior appearance of the church. It has three naves and a barrel vault over the central nave. It is supported by Corinthian columns .
The portal in the central risalit , on the tower front, is protruding , crowned with a cornice in a high wall niche that ends with a round arch .
history
Today's church had different predecessors. The first church building made of wood can be traced back to the Franconian times around 700 AD. The patron saint of this first Reese church was St. Dentlinus from the Merovingian royal family .
In 1012 the construction of a stone church began. The church was founded by St. Irmgard von Aspel , completed in 1040 and consecrated to Our Lady .
Before her death, she transferred the collegiate foundation and her property Aspel to the Archbishop of Cologne, Anno von Steusslingen .
In 1458 the late Gothic high choir was added, which towered over the five-aisled church. The nave was not rebuilt. This church was a collegiate church and also a parish church .
After the collapse of the dilapidated old collegiate church in 1817, today's classical parish church was built between 1820 and 1828 according to plans by the building inspector Karl Gottlieb Herrmann from Kleve .
During the Second World War , the church was destroyed on February 14 and 16, 1945, except for the outer walls, and with it the entire city. In 1949 an emergency church was built. The reconstruction in the classical style took place until 1970.
Furnishing
The interior is determined by Corinthian columns that support the barrel vault with the coffered ceiling .
The baptismal font with a copper lid is a foundation of the Counts von Spee from 1953. The church is the baptistery of Blessed Karl Leisner .
The bronze doors in the main portal are a work by Ulrich Henn . They were inserted in 1970. The 28 fields on the doors represent the events of Jesus , his coming into the world, his preaching, his suffering and death and his resurrection.
The model was probably the portal doors of the Marienthal monastery church with the depiction of Edwin Scharff's creed .
organ
The organ with three manual works and a pedal work was built by Romanus Seifert in Kevelaer in 1974/75 . It contains almost 3000 pipes and 37 registers .

Other equipment
- The Polders goldsmith's workshop in Kevelaer made the tabernacle , candlesticks and the eternal light . A bas-relief on the doors of the tabernacle shows the image with the Annunciation of the Archangel Gabriel to Mary , which forms the center. The proclaimed secret of faith is confirmed in a Latin inscription : “ And the word became flesh ” ( John 1:14 ).
- To the right of the choir is the representation of the Mother of God with the child. It comes from a Cologne workshop in the second half of the 14th century.
- In the right side chapel there is a wooden sculpture of St. George . Under the rearing horse , the dragon winds under the thrust of the lance. The portrait of the dragon slayer is a carving from around 1530, probably created by a master of the Kalkar altars .
- A depiction of the mourning Maria Magdalena under the cross is in the left aisle. It dates from the first half of the 16th century.
