St. Mary Magdalene

St. Maria Magdalena is a church named after Maria Magdalena , a disciple of Jesus attested to in all four Gospels, of the Evangelical Lutheran parish Kirchleus / Gössersdorf ( Deanery Kulmbach ).

Building description and history

The current church was built from 1772 to 1776 on the site of its two previous churches. The baptismal font, which was created in 1581 by the Kulmbach sculptor and painter Wolf Keller , was taken from the last church . This shows the coats of arms of the donor couple von Guttenberg and von Waldenfels and the baptism of Jesus on the Jordan. The Epistle chair from 1754 was also taken over.

In 1770 the old church tower was demolished because it was in disrepair and the new one was built in 1772 under the direction of the master builder Johann Wölfel . Three bells were installed that have been preserved to this day. Also under the direction of Wölfel, a new church was built in 1774 because, according to the pastor at the time, the old church was "too low, too narrow and too dark". The masonry up to the level of the portals was taken over. The remains of a small Gothic window on the northeast side next to the tower and the pointed arches of the portals still bear witness to this today. The newly built nave was just as wide as the old one, but longer and higher.

This was followed by the interior work in the baroque style, probably under the direction of the court plasterer Rudolf Albini . The furnishings include a baroque pulpit altar whose creator is unknown. Above the pulpit the risen One can be seen holding the cross. Above it is the symbol for God.

On July 2, 1776, the feast day of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary , the inauguration of the new church could be celebrated. This day is still the church fair Sunday. Before that, the parish fair was always celebrated on Mary Magdalene Day (July 22nd).

The organ was purchased in 1889. It was manufactured by the Steinmeyer company from Oettingen .

In 1979 there was a comprehensive interior renovation of the church. In 1997 an exterior renovation was carried out.
