St. Martinus Stebenich

St. Martinus is a Roman Catholic branch church in the Jülich district of Stetternich in the Düren district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The church is dedicated to St. Martin von Tours and belongs to the Jülich large parish of the Holy Spirit.

history

The Stebenich church is mentioned for the first time in the 13th century. There are no more traces of this church today. In the 15th century the old church was replaced by a new Gothic building. This Gothic church was expanded and rebuilt after 1674, so that only remnants of the Gothic church can be seen today in the south wall. In 1716 the church tower was finally built on older remains. In 1800 the nave was badly damaged by fire. The nave had to be almost completely rebuilt between 1803 and 1804, only the tower survived the fire relatively unscathed and was preserved. In 1936 a new choir with sacristy was added to the hall church. The church was badly damaged during World War II.

Until December 31, 2012, Stebenich was an independent parish. On January 1, 2013 the parish was merged with 13 other former parishes to form the parish of Heilig Geist Jülich.

Furnishing

In the church there is a baroque high altar and a baroque pulpit. These come from the castle chapel in Jülich. The two side altars, which are also Baroque, come from the Vogelsang Charterhouse and were created in 1742. The two confessionals were created around 1920. The windows of the church were made by Julius Brand in the 1960s.
