General view of the church

St. Matthias is a Catholic parish church in the Fürstenried district of Munich . The church building from the 1960s is a listed building .

Building

The design of the church and the associated parish center with rectory and parish hall comes from Alexander von Branca .

Overall system

A closed complex includes the church and the associated buildings; they are made of brownish brick both outside and inside. The center, from which all buildings are accessible, is the churchyard, which is separated from the street by a brick wall and paved with reddish brick. The access to the courtyard is in the twenty meter high campanile . The actual - windowless - church building in the east of the complex has a square floor plan. A 14-meter-high rotunda placed in the building protrudes halfway from the outer walls and thus forms a dominant feature that is already visible from afar. The entrance to the church is emphasized by a tower-like cuboid of the same height leaning against the rotunda; a similar extension is on the opposite side.

In the churchyard there is a fountain made of seven stone cylinders, which stand for the seven sacraments ; it is the work of Johannes Engelhardt .

inner space

The rotunda rests on 32 round pillars inside the church and is therefore accessible everywhere. At the entrance and on the opposite side - behind the altar - it is interrupted; there are rectangular niches corresponding to the tower-like additions visible from the outside. The square surrounding building is illuminated by skylights , the rotunda by a narrow strip of light just below the flat roof and a central light shaft. The light band gives the raised ceiling lightness. The lighting situation creates a clear contrast between the darker interior and the lighter, round center of the church. The altar stands in the middle of the room, the brightest part of the church. It is surrounded on three sides by benches for the community. The baptistery is built in the south-west corner and the everyday chapel in the north-east corner .

Furnishing

organ

The ceiling, confessionals and pews are made of reddish Afzelia wood . A large bronze hanging cross by Roland Friederichsen in the niche opposite the entrance shows biblical scenes. Altar and baptismal font are from Johannes Kreuz , tabernacle and candlestick from Blasius Gerg . Joseph Michael Neustifter created the bronze depictions of the Stations of the Cross on the walls .

organ

The organ was built in 1974 by Wilhelm Stöberl . It has 22 stops on two manuals and a pedal.

history

The community was founded in 1962 as a branch of Heilig Kreuz in Forstenried. Initially, church services took place in the church of Fürstenried Castle, until a temporary building was erected at the current location in the autumn of the same year . In March 1964 the parish became independent, initially as a parish curate .

The cornerstone of the new church was laid in November 1964, and the inauguration was celebrated on December 12, 1965.
