General

Dedenborn belonged to the parish of Simmerath since the 14th century. However, a separate church was only built in the 18th century, as the way to the parish church in Simmerath was too difficult for the residents. The then Simmerath pastor Peter Richartz supported the construction of a branch church in Dedenborn. In 1717 the place received its own vicar .

In the course of parish registrations during the French period , Dedenborn was detached from Simmerath and raised to the status of an independent parish . Even then, the new parish included Rauchauel and Seifenauel. Between 1804 and 1825 Hammer was also part of the parish and between 1832 and 1956 also Erkensruhr .

Building history

Today's Dedenborn Church was built between 1717 and 1718 in Baroque style and is the first church in the town. A local master builder provided the plans. The benediction took place on June 9, 1718. In 1770 a sacristy was added to the east side of the choir .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the old church was to be replaced by a new building. In 1902 a church building association had already been founded for this purpose. However, with the outbreak of World War I , these plans were discarded. The church was finally renovated in 1932.

In the Second World War , the parish church was only slightly damaged and could be used again for church services in September 1945. In 1969 the parish church had to be closed due to the danger of collapse. In the course of this, the two Aachen architects Otto Fronhöfer and Walter Horn were commissioned to plan the restoration and expansion of the church, which had meanwhile become too small. The sacristy and the choir, which is closed on three sides, were first demolished for expansion. A transept was added to the nave between 1972 and 1973, to which a new choir adjoins in the east. The work was completed on May 1, 1973.

Building description

Until the renovations, St. Michael was a single-aisled baroque hall church in two axes with a three-sided choir closure. Since the expansion it has been a single-nave cruciform church with a baroque nave and modern transept and a choir closed on five sides. The extension is a little higher than the old building. The transept is divided on the north and south side by three gables with gable roofs. The nave has a hipped gable roof to the west , above which there is a single-storey slated roof turret with an eight-sided tower hood.

Furnishing

The baptismal font from 1721 by Johann Heinrich Heupgen from Wollseifen , a cross with crucifix from 1789 and a Stations of the Cross from the 18th century are still preserved from the baroque furnishings . The Tabernacle of bronze on a concrete pillar that a tree of life represents, is a work of the Aachen artist Gerhard Thewis from 1973. Also located in the church Kreuzreliquiar 18th century. The stained glass windows are the work of Erich Chalier and were used in 1991.
