The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Vitus is located in St. Vit , a district of Rheda-Wiedenbrück in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It belongs to the Reckenberg Pastoral Association in the Archdiocese of Paderborn .

history

The origins of the church go back to 1050. However, at that time a chapel stood elsewhere. The parish was established on May 19, 1212 by Bishop Gerhard von Osnabrück. For this purpose, some farms were combined and the farmers were obliged to take care of the maintenance of a chapel and the pastor. The deed of incorporation is received. The first chapel fell into disrepair and was replaced by a new one in 1259. It was under the patronage of St. Mary and St. Vitus, you were in front of the city. Because of the armed conflicts between the then independent towns of Rheda and Wiedenbrück , the residents of St. Vit relocated the church several times in order to enable safe church visits again. A chapel at the current location was built in 1552, which then fell into disrepair in 1730 and had to be demolished. According to a decision by the community and the pastor at the time, Christoph Heinrich Wippermann, a larger stone church should be built. From 1734–1736 there was a completely new building as an originally choirless hall church . The outer walls are structured by buttresses. In 1912 the church was given its current shape with a choir , roof turret and west tower according to the plans of the architect Franz Mündelein from Paderborn . At the same time the building was redesigned in a new baroque style. In contrast to the nave, the choir has colored windows. A servant from the Westhoff farm donated the window on the right. He made a condition for his foundation that sheep should be depicted on the window. The glass artist depicted Jesus handing over the leadership of the church to Peter , feed my lambs, feed my sheep . On the left window Jesus is depicted at the Sermon on the Mount. The right round window shows Vitus with the furnace and the left round window Agnes with the lamb. In 1981 the interior was restored. An exterior restoration was carried out in 1991. An extensive interior and exterior renovation was carried out in 2011/2012. In 2012 the church received an outdoor lighting system that illuminates the renovated building at night.

Furnishing

High altar of St. Vitus Church
Floor plan from around 1900
  • The high altar from 1741, which was designed in the Baroque style, is worth seeing . The drapery looks restless, the figures are carved. It is attributed to Joseph Guidobald Licht. The altar panel shows the Holy Family, it was added in 1898 by Anton Waller. The altar was extensively restored in 1960 and again by the company Ochsenfarth in original colors taken . The upper figure shows Vitus with a victory palm. Below that, on a medallion picture, the Mother of God is depicted with little Jesus. On the left is the figure of Joseph . The originally attached saw attribute was lost. Instead, today he is carrying a lily in his hand. The apostle Andrew is tortured on a cross, to the right of it the arch martyr Stephen can be seen, as an attribute he carries two stones on a book. Next to it is a figure of Johannes Nepomuk, he is holding a crucifix in his hand.
  • In the cemetery surrounding the church there is a carved crucifixion group in an open chapel. The figures are larger than life, they were carved around 1500.
  • The cemetery cross, with the body of Christ, is the work of the Wiedenbrück sculptor Paul Libor.
  • The side altars were added in 1913.
  • The pulpit is marked 1766 and is richly carved; like the main altar, it is probably a work of light.
  • The late Gothic Pietà was carved.
  • On the side walls there are figures of saints, some of which come from the Wiedenbrück school or are ascribed to light.
  • Above the door to the organ staircase hangs the coat of arms of the Wyck family, carved by the Licht brothers, with the year 1734. The Counts of Wyck donated a large part of the church and the furnishings.
  • In a niche there is a reliquary monstrance with relics of St. Vitus, it was made in 1928.
