Sta. Rita Hills AVA (recognized since May 31, 2001) is a wine-growing region in the US state of California . The area is in the Santa Barbara County administrative area . The wine-growing region is part of the parent Santa Ynez Valley AVA and Central Coast AVA . Between 2001 and 2006, the area was officially called Santa Rita Hills AVA . However, the large Chilean winery Vina Santa Rita successfully opposed this name . The name was finally changed on January 5, 2006.

Sta. Rita Hills is located between the towns of Lompoc and Buellton and is part of the Purisima Hills in the north and the Santa Rosa Hills in the south. The east-west part is cooled by fog and sea breezes from the Pacific Ocean . In connection with the cool soil, wine of the early ripening grape varieties Chardonnay and Pinot Noir as well as the later ripening Syrah can be produced here.
