Santa Ynez Valley AVA (recognized since April 15, 1983) is a wine-growing region in the Santa Ynez Valley in the US state of California . The area is in the Santa Barbara County administrative area . The wine-growing region is part of the parent Central Coast AVA and is the most important supplier of vines to Santa Barbara County. The valley is bordered to the north by the Purisima Hills and the San Rafael Mountains and to the south by the Santa Ynez Mountains . In the cooler west of the valley, the white grape variety Chardonnay is grown with success . In the warmer east, however, late-ripening grape varieties from the Rhône such as Syrah , Grenache and Roussanne are used.
