The Eurodual 2159 locomotives are combined diesel and electric locomotives for route service that are produced by Stadler Rail near Valencia in Spain. In 2019, the first three of a total of ten locomotives ordered from Havelländische Eisenbahn were delivered and are currently in the test and commissioning phase. The locomotives are among the largest one-piece locomotives on German tracks.

history

88 003 from Direct Rail Services , the electrical equipment for the Stadler Eurodual 2159 was taken over from this construction

The locomotives are based on the six-axle Euro 4000 diesel locomotives , the four-axle Beacon Rail Class 68 diesel locomotive (2013) and the four-axle bimodal EuroDual Class 88 from 2013. These machines were still developed by Vossloh . In 2014, a first draft of a heavy six-axle, bimodal locomotive from Vossloh was presented at the InnoTrans trade fair .

After Stadler Rail took over the factory near Valencia from Vossloh, the design was further developed. In 2017, the first six-axis Eurodual was created for France . It received the NVR number 92 87 0006 001-7 F-STVA and was named Eurodual F within the company . This locomotive is used in France by the VFLI . It can be used in the French network with voltages of 25 kV at 50 Hz AC and 1.5 kV DC . The diesel engine can also be used in DC operation to increase power. This locomotive was subjected to intensive tests before it was used in France, Belgium and Romania .

At the end of 2018, the first locomotives of the ten vehicles ordered by the Havelländische Eisenbahn were delivered, which are internally referred to as Eurodual D and differ from the Eurodual F prototype in terms of appearance and electrical components . At the end of the year, the first test drives with the 159 001 locomotive took place on the route from Treuchtlingen to Donauwörth . At the Transport logistic trade fair in Munich , it became known that VFLI had ordered 12 new Euro 4001 diesel locomotives (a further development of the Euro 4000) and the ITL Eisenbahngesellschaft had ordered four Eurodual locomotives from Stadler Rail. The leasing company European Loc Pool has also ordered ten locomotives from the series.

Awards

Stadler Rail (Valencia), together with Havelländische Eisenbahn AG (HVLE), was awarded the Privatbahn Magazin innovation prize for the development of the Eurodual 2159 in 2018/2019 .

commitment

HVLE 159 001-010

The locomotives of the Havelländische Eisenbahn are to operate electrified and non-electrified routes with different contact wire voltages. Specifically, it concerns the Rübelandbahn electrified with 25 kV at 50 Hz , the German long-distance railway network, which is supplied with 15 kV at 16.7 Hz, and the so far not electrified access routes to the Rübelandbahn. So far, this traffic has been handled electrically with locomotives of the 185 series and on the non-electrified sections with diesel locomotives. The Eurodual would be the universal locomotive for these services. In addition, it is significantly more powerful than the machines currently in use and also has the locomotive friction load necessary for the steep sections . After the DR series E 251 , six-axle locomotives are again used on the Rübelandbahn. The locomotives could also take care of tasks on the last mile .

The locomotives were approved for the HVLE on February 12, 2020.

On August 29, 2020, the 159 003 was rented by DB Fernverkehr for test drives on the high-speed route Cologne / Rhine-Main . The test train consisted of two class 407 multiple units and a class 101 locomotive . However, this should only simulate the mass of the passengers.

Captrain Germany 159 101-104

As a subsidiary of Captrain Deutschland , ITL Eisenbahngesellschaft Dresden is to move into four locomotives in 2020. These locomotives are given the numbers 159 101 to 104. The first locomotive 159 101 went into service at the beginning of March 2020.

Heavy Haul Power International 159 201-205

Heavy Haul Power International's locomotives were delivered to the company at the end of January / beginning of February 2020. Compared to the pre-production locomotives of the Havelländische Eisenbahn, the locomotives have a modified front design based on the Stadler KISS 3 . The locomotives are to take over heavy coal trains from Class 66 and Class 77 .

On March 13, 2020 ELP received three locomotives with the numbers 159 206-208. The locomotives were initially delivered in white with the details of the leasing company ELP on the side walls and were rented by the railway companies BSAS Eisenbahn Verkehr and BoxTango . The 159 208 was pasted with a sticker by the designer Gudrun Geiblinger and has been running for the BSAS Eisenbahn Verkehr company since April 2020 .

technology

The locomotive construction is based on proven technology from the former Vossloh factory in Valencia. The locomotive consists of components from the Euro 4000 (frame and bogies), the four-axle Vossloh Eurolight diesel locomotive (tank, diesel engine system, fan, exhaust system) and the bimodal Class 88 (main transformer, electrical equipment). The combination of these elements resulted in the desired configuration of the series for the HVLE. With a length over buffers of 23,020 mm, the locomotives are the largest machines on German tracks.

The load-bearing elements of the locomotive are made from various types of steel. The side walls of the engine room are firmly welded to the frame. Driver's cabs and entry areas are separate bodies. The roof consists of five segments; in addition to the pantographs, they also take other components such as B. the radiator fan on. The driver's cabs are soundproofed and air-conditioned. The driver has his workplace in the middle of the driver's cab.

Despite their three-axle design, the bogies are considered to be gentle on the track, as they have even lower lateral forces than the two-axle bogies of the Bombardier TRAXX and Siemens Vectron . The primary suspension takes place via coil springs , the secondary suspension is implemented in the form of rubber-metal elements and vibration dampers .

The diesel-electric power transmission is supplied by the sixteen-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine C175-16 from Caterpillar , which is in the power ranges of the former DR-142 . In the electrical part, tried and tested elements are used with the electrical scaffolding, the IGBT- based converters and the roof consoles.
