The motor ship Stadt Radolfzell , formerly Queen Katharina, is a passenger ship of the Bodensee-Schiffsbetriebe Konstanz operating on Lake Constance.
history
In 1993, the Deutsche Bundesbahn commissioned a motor ship the size of Schaffhausen, built for the Swiss shipping company Untersee und Rhein (URh), from Deutsche Binnenwerften GmbH (DBW) with a shipyard in Genthin on the Elbe-Havel Canal . The sectional construction method was chosen as the construction method . The keel for the first section was laid on December 14, 1993 in the Genthin shipyard. In spring 1994 the sections were transported from Saxony-Anhalt to Fußach in Vorarlberg , Austria . There the floating assembly of the sections took place with the support of Österreichische Schiffbau- und Werft AG (ÖSWAG), Linz . The ship was then transferred to the BSB shipyard in Friedrichshafen for final assembly . Outwardly, the ship resembles the large motor ship Graf Zeppelin .
The official launch was April 28, 1994. However, the ship could not yet be launched into the water at this point; this only took place a few weeks later. The ship was christened "Queen Katharina" after Queen Katharina von Württemberg (1788-1819) and the maiden voyage took place on June 18, 1994.
The ship was originally planned for regular and special trips on the Untersee and Rhine and was initially used there together with the motor ship Reichenau . Since 1999 the "Kathi", as the ship is called by the locals, has been used mainly for charter, scheduled and round trips in Lindau . Until 1999 it was approved for 300 passengers. The maximum number of passengers has now been increased to 500 people.
In the early summer of 2003, Queen Katherina was relocated to Lindau, where she took over the tours and course trips to Rorschach for the Lindau . In the same year the ship and the Graf Zeppelin took third place in the Blue Ribbon of Lake Constance .
In the winter of 2005/2006, the ship was stuck in the BSB shipyard in Friedrichshafen for weeks due to the record low water level and was unable to return to Lake Constance due to the low water level. In the 2006 season, the ship took the crash course from Bregenz to the island of Mainau . In the winter half of 2006/2007 the Queen Katharina was overtaken in the BSB shipyard.
On October 14, 2014, for reasons that have not yet been clarified, the ship drove against the boundaries of the port in the port of Constance and caused damage of around 20,000 euros there.
The Queen Katharina is still used for special trips all over Lake Constance with the Untersee and the Rhine.
On the occasion of the 750th anniversary of the city of Radolfzell, the ship was renamed “City of Radolfzell” in a small ceremony on March 28, 2017. In the future - after 18 years of absence - it will again have Radolfzell as its home port and will be used for cruises on the Untersee.
