Stadtpfarrkirche Heilig Geist (Neuburg an der Donau)
The Roman Catholic hospital and parish church of the Holy Spirit in Neuburg an der Donau belongs to the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen deanery of the diocese of Augsburg .
history
The church has its origins in the chapel of the hospital , which was founded in 1520 by Adam von Toerring. Under Count Palatine Ottheinrich , it was a Protestant church, replaced by a new building in 1592 and elevated to a parish church in 1602. After being recatholicized by Count Palatine Wolfgang Wilhelm in 1614, it remained a parish church. In 1617 it was reconciled and consecrated to the Holy Spirit .
The present church was rebuilt between 1723 and 1724. The builder was probably Johann Puchtler. The result was a spacious hall with a retracted, semicircular closed choir . Only the basement of the square tower, which was built in 1656 by Johann Serro , was retained. The tower was raised in 1737–1739, also by Puchtler.
A fundamental interior renovation took place in 1990/1991 and it will be comprehensively renovated again from 2019 to 2020.
Furnishing
The interior was 1724 by Matthias Abel with Bandelwerk stuck with frescoes of Matthias zinc decorated. The frescoes show scenes from the life of Christ, Mary and St. Peter. The high altar was donated in 1750 and executed by Joseph Anton Breitenauer based on a design by Matthias Seybold .
