Matthias Zink

Matthias Zink , also: Zinckh , (* February 12 or 13, 1665 in Donaumünster near Donauwörth ; † November 2, 1738 in Eichstätt ), was a painter of the Baroque period, primarily in the Eichstätt monastery .

Life

Matthias Zink was born as the son of the farmer Andreas Zink and his wife Maria. Probably on his journey as a painter's journeyman, he came to the prince-bishop's residence city of Eichstätt, where he apparently took his master's examination. On January 17, 1691, he married Anna Maria, daughter of the Eichstatt citizen and Wagner Georg Hofmann. Zinc cannot be verified as a citizen of Eichstatt, but only as a "resident"; he probably lived with his father-in-law and was often away because of his work. The marriage resulted in two children: on May 16, 1694 Johann Michael , who also became a painter, from 1716 in Neresheimand the surrounding area, married in 1753 and died in Neresheim in 1765, and Maria Viktoria († 1738) in 1697. Two years after the death of Matthias Zink, his wife died on February 19, 1740 in Eichstätt.

Works

Matthias Zink worked primarily in the Eichstätt Monastery as a painter of altarpieces, antependia and ceiling frescoes , and occasionally also as a barrel painter. He is one of the notable, but not one of the outstanding baroque artists; art historians rate his frescoes in Plankstetten as “medium-sized works” (Hofmann / Mader, p. 133). About 40 works from his hand are known or are attributed to him:

  • Altar sheet and version of the choir altar of the parish church in Kösingen near Neresheim (1688/89; removed in 1720)
  • Painting of the Last Supper in the former Domkapiteltrinkstube Eichstätt (end of the 17th century)
  • Former Catholic St. Aegidien Church (today Evangelical Lutheran Apostle Church) in Konstein near Wellheim , ceiling painting of Maria Immaculata and four medallions as oil paintings; the twelve apostles on the gallery parapet (around 1700; ceiling painting no longer existed since 1961/62)
