The Bad Salzuflen city bus has been serving local public transport in the spa town of Bad Salzuflen ( Lippe district , North Rhine-Westphalia ) since the mid-1990s . Four city bus routes open up the inner city area and larger areas of the outer districts. In addition, there are numerous regional bus and school transport routes that also open up places outside the city.

The operator of the city lines is Stadtverkehrsgesellschaft Bad Salzuflen mbH , a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Bad Salzuflen .

concept

Bus station (ZOB) at Ostertor: ground floor of a parking garage

The city bus system started operating shortly after its model, the Lemgo city bus (1994). The aim was, within a newly planned traffic concept for the entire inner city, to reduce individual traffic, to relieve the narrow streets of the historical area and to expand the space for pedestrians (e.g. Lange Straße / Salzhof). The Ostertor car park is used as the bus meeting point. A clear route network plan with color-coded lines was created, new, characteristic stop signs and turquoise-green bus shelters in accordance with the color scheme . The buses of the three main lines (941, 942, 943) ran every 30 minutes on weekdays until 2008. In order to ensure a smooth and direct transfer between the lines, all vehicles arrive at the rendezvous at the same time and leave it approx. 3 minutes later. Following the example of the city bus Lemgo be midibuses used with a uniform color. There is no large-scale advertising on the vehicles.

For regional traffic, a new bus station (ZOB) was built approx. 300 m from the market just outside the city center on the ground floor of a car park. There are stops for the city buses in front of this building, so that there are good transfer options (provided that connection times are long enough).

Much of the system’s success is due to the city’s commitment. This part of the costs and finances special ticket offers for the city area. Initially, in addition to season tickets , discounted 4-person tickets were also issued. In order to limit the costs, after a few years only cheaper monthly, 3-month and annual tickets were issued. Spa guests receive an inexpensive spa card. A city bus office was set up directly on the market for information and ticket sales, but is now located in the town hall.

In the area of Knetterheide and Wülfer-Bexten , the regional buses to Bielefeld / Leopoldshöhe (349, 350, BVO ) continue to be served; this area was only included in the city bus network to a small extent in 2008. Line 433 Herford - Bad Salzuflen - Exter (formerly to Vlotho, since June 2011 BVO ) has also been preserved, which was formerly operated by the Minden-Ravensberg (VMR) transport company . Not included in the city bus network are Retzen (service 2 × per hour via regional line 963 to Lemgo, Go.on Gesellschaft für Bus- und Eisenbahnverkehr ), Lockhausen (hourly line 961 in the direction of Herford, BVO ) and Ahmsen (access via Herford city bus S5) .

history

High-performance means of transport existed in the city between 1909 and 1924. The Bad Salzufler and Schötmarsche tram , a horse-drawn tram , connected the train station with the spa area and also drove to the then independent community of Schötmar for a few years .

The starting point for the city bus system was a little developed urban bus traffic with low passenger demand and a non-timed demand schedule. It consisted u. a. a circular transport line from the center via Kliniken am Burggraben, Waldemeine, Extersche Straße and back to the city center. The regional bus network was well developed and at the same time took over most of the inner-city development. The most important regional lines to Bielefeld , Leopoldshöhe and Herford still operate today. The long-distance bus route 433, formerly Herford - Bad Salzuflen - Vlotho - Valdorf-Ost Winterberg station, whose predecessor was the Herford small train, has a particularly long tradition . This line did not belong to the then existing Verkehrsgemeinschaft Lippe (VGL) and therefore had a special tariff until the introduction of the tariff association "Der Sechser". It served the Salzhof until the start of the bus station at Ostertor , then until November 2003, every half hour, alternating between the spa center and the central bus station . Today it is led past the center every hour on Bahnhofstrasse.

The city bus network was introduced while largely retaining the existing regional network with four bus routes (940 to 943) and supplemented or expanded in several stages. Line 940 (Walhalla - Grüner Sand / Storksbrede) did not serve the city center, but had a connection to line 942 in Schötmar. The service to Holzhausen, which is a long way from the city center (with a rail connection in Sylbach), came later by extending line 942 from Pommernstrasse. For this, the date after was able through regional line 371 broken. The travel time to Holzhausen was therefore considerably longer. a. because of the additional service of commercial areas. Due to the low demand on the section from Pommernstraße to Holzhausen , the half-hourly service was soon replaced by an hourly service.

In the course of the network expansion, changes were made to line 940. It was extended to Am Markt and served the newly emerging shopping area on Hoffmannstrasse. The low usage of the line eventually led to the conversion to a calling line . Since January 1, 2008, service has only been available from Walhalla to Schötmar and Storksbrede / Grüner Sand after registering by telephone, with an extension to Bad Salzuflen train station and Werl . Since then, Hoffmannstrasse has been served by line 942.

The peripheral areas were and are served with additional lines outside the city bus network and school transport. For a long time, this included the Wüsten district, which was served by regional line 947 (ZOB - Wüsten - Kirchheide ) . In 2008 line 947 was integrated into the city bus network. The Wüsten - Kirchheide line section (City of Lemgo) was discontinued and the line was extended to Knetterheide, Weisse Breden. After the changeover of line 943 to an hourly service, it supplements the service from Am Markt to LVA-Klinik every half hour.

The city's financial situation led to restrictions in city bus operations in 2008. With the exception of line 941, the city buses only run every hour. However, due to parallel traffic, there is still a half-hourly service on sections of the route. At the end of 2007 a new order was placed by the city transport company. The previous operator, Karl Niebäumer Omnibusbetrieb GmbH & Co. KG, was defeated in the competition against the more cost-effective offer from Karl Köhne Omnibusbetriebe GmbH (a subsidiary of Verkehrsbetriebe Extertal-Extertalbahn GmbH ). Since then, this company has carried out ongoing operations.

In 2016, line 947 from the Schweerweg stop in Knetterheide was merged with line 961 ( BVO ) , so that Lockhausen can again be reached without changing from the city center. As a result, the hairpin bend with the stops Weisse Breden, Schelpstraße and Heidsiek is only served in the morning when the two lines are broken.

With the exception of line 941, the buses run every hour. Due to parallel traffic, there is a 30-minute cycle on the ZOB - LVA-Klinik section. Status: December 2008

The towns of Biemsen-Ahmsen , Hollenstein, Pillenbruch, Walhalla, Storksbrede and Grüner Sand are connected to the city bus network at the normal rate by CallLinienFahrten (ALF). In addition, collective call taxes (AST), which are subject to a surcharge, run to the districts and back in the evenings and on weekends .

Vehicle use

By Karl Niebäumer Omnibusbetrieb GmbH & Co. KG buses were the model initially Neoplan Metroliner (N8012) used on the line 940 of the operation with a later Mercedes-Benz Cito performed (O 520). After a few years, the Neoplan Metroliner was gradually replaced by the Neoplan Centroliner (N4411). Mercedes-Benz Citaro K (O 530 K) were used until the end of 2019
to start operations at Karl Köhne Omnibusbetriebe GmbH . In 2017 one vehicle was replaced by a
Mercedes-Benz Citaro 2 LE , in 2018 one and in 2019 two more Mercedes-Benz Citaro 2 Hybrids were added, of which the newer ones have USB ports on each seat. When the Mercedes-Benz Citaro K (O 530 K) is completely retired, Mercedes-Benz Citaro Facelifts from the Lemgo city bus network will be used instead . From 2022, six Mercedes-Benz eCitaro are to be used.

With the merger of lines 947 and 961 ( BVO ) in 2016, line 947 is also served by a Mercedes-Benz Citaro facelift from Pieper Omnibusverkehr Fritz Pieper KG.

Until 2011, the vehicles had a white base color with turquoise spikes on the lower edge of the vehicle, but were re-foiled in the course of the new logo and now have dark red and turquoise stripes. The latter are green for the hybrid vehicles.

Stops

City bus stop Altenberndstraße

In the construction phase of the city bus network, all stops were equipped with new signs. The half-hourly departure times on all lines at that time were shown in large letters on the metal stop signs. The four lines were marked in color according to the line network plan. Most of the stops were also given a bus shelter, and important points also received a ticket machine . At that time, raised curbs and facilities for the disabled were not yet standard. In the meantime, no improvements have been made to the stops, new stops on Hoffmannstraße, for example, have not received any waiting shelters, and curbs could not be adapted to the current standard anywhere and provided with guidance systems for the disabled or sufficient lowering for wheelchair users, etc. With boarding assistants who accompany the buses on the main sections on weekdays, the city is trying to make it easier for disabled passengers to take them along and thus speed up operations.

City bus office

There is a city bus office in the municipal utilities of Bad Salzuflen, where tickets are sold and passengers can be advised.

Local transport tariff

Bad Salzuflen belongs to the " Westfalentarif " ( OWL Verkehr GmbH) tariff association . The city transport company issues discounted monthly, 3-month and annual tickets.
