Staffan Ahrenberg

Staffan Hjalmar Theodor Ahrenberg (born September 27, 1957 in Stockholm ) is a Swedish publisher and film producer. He is the owner of the French art and literature publisher Cahiers d'Art and an art collector.

life and career

Born as the second child of businessman Theodor Ahrenberg (1912–89) and Ulla Ahrenberg (née Frisell), Ahrenberg grew up in Stockholm and Chexbres , Switzerland. As a child he got to know modern art through his father's extensive collection. The collection put together between the late 1940s and 1980s included works by u. a. Pablo Picasso , Henri Matisse , Marc Chagall , Le Corbusier , Olle Bærtling , Sam Francis , Mark Tobey and Lucio Fontana . The most important exhibits in the collection included a. the two versions of Matisse's Apollo (1953), Picasso's Femme nue au fauteuil à bascule (1956) and Chagall's Les mariés sous le baldaquin (1949). In 1962 the Ahrenberg family moved to Chexbres; until 1977 there was a studio for visiting artists such as u. a. Christo , Tadeusz Kantor , Enrico Baj , Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle .

In 1975 Ahrenberg met the producer of Superman (1978, Darst. Marlon Brando) Alexander Salkind (1921–97). Ahrenberg completed a three-year apprenticeship with Salkind before moving to Los Angeles to start his own career as a producer. Ahrenberg's films include: a. Networked - Johnny Mnemonic (1995, directed by Robert Longo, Darst. Keanu Reeves), Total Eclipse - The Affair of Rimbaud and Verlaine (1995, directed by Agnieszka Holland, Darst. Leonardo DiCaprio), The Quiet American (2002, directed by Phillip Noyce, starring Michael Caine) and Summer Love (2006, directed by Piotr Uklański , starring Bogusław Linda).

In 2011 Ahrenberg acquired the publishing house Cahiers d'Art, which had been founded in 1926 by the art historian and publisher Christian Zervos (1889–1970). Cahiers d'Art is based at 14 Rue du Dragon, Paris, and also runs a gallery and publishes a magazine of the same name. On October 18, 2012, Ahrenberg published the first issue of the magazine since 1960. This issue is dedicated to Ellsworth Kelly, co-editors were Hans Ulrich Obrist and Sam Keller. Later editions are devoted to important living artists such as u. a. Rosemarie Trockel , Hiroshi Sugimoto and Gabriel Orozco . Cahiers d'Art books published by Ahrenberg include Calder by Matter (2012), Ellsworth Kelly: Catalog Raisonné of Paintings, Reliefs, and Sculpture. Vol. 1, 1940–1953 (2015), Thomas Schütte: Watercolors for Robert Walser and Donald Young, 2011–2012 (2016), as well as the newly published, 33-volume catalog raisonné Pablo Picasso par Christian Zervos ( "Le Zervos" ), originally published between 1932 and 1978.

In addition, Ahrenberg works as an exhibition coordinator z. B. “Hiroshi Sugimoto” (2014) and “Miró” (2018) in the Galerie Cahiers d'Art, “Le Corbusier. The Secrets of Creativity: Between Painting and Architecture ”(2012) in the Pushkin Museum, Moscow, and“ Moment - Le Corbusier's Secret Laboratory ”(2013) in the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Art collection

Ahrenberg has been collecting modern and contemporary art since 1977. His first acquisitions were geometric works by z. B. Auguste Herbin and Josef Albers . The current collection contains exhibits by, among others, Pablo Picasso , Henri Matisse , Wassily Kandinsky , Le Corbusier , Richard Serra , Robert Longo , Wolfgang Tillmans , Cildo Meireles , Jenny Holzer , Martin Kippenberger and Adrián Villar Rojas .
