Stahlmann is a German band that was founded in Göttingen in 2008 and belongs to the New German Hard Music genre .

history

AblaZ at the Amphi Festival 2017

The band was founded in 2008 in Göttingen. The band initially consisted of Mart and Alex, later Tobi joined them. The following year, 2009, the debut EP Herzschlag was released, with which the band entered the Top 20 of the German Alternative Charts. Through concerts with well-known artists from the metal and medieval rock sector, such as Doro , In Extremo and Saltatio Mortis , Stahlmann steadily increased his level of awareness.

In 2010 Stahlmann went on a tour presented by the music magazine Zillo . The debut album Stahlmann was released on September 17, 2010 on the record label AFM Records . On September 3rd, the single Hass Mich… Lieb Mich was released . Also in September 2010 the band was on the road as support for Eisbrecher in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. It was precisely because of this support slot that Stahlmann received a great deal of attention in the NDH scene.

The second album with the name Mercury was released on January 20, 2012 and made it into the chart at number 39 in the German album charts in the first week.

For private reasons, band member Alex said goodbye to the band, but he is still available for shows from time to time. Until the end of 2012, Stahlmann used various guest musicians for live shows.

On March 1, 2013, the first single from the third album Adamant was released with Süchtig . The single was sold out on the day it was released and reached number 6 in the German alternative charts.

With the new music video for the second single Schwarz , Stahlmann also presented his new line-up on April 5, 2013, consisting of Martin Soer on vocals, Tobi Berkefeld on guitars, Niklas Kahl on drums and AblaZ on bass. Teufel , the singer of Tanzwut , also has a guest appearance on this song.

After the previous productions had left quieter songs that did not fit the usual band direction, Soer decided to start a side project called Sündenklang together with the electronic musician Neill Freiwald from Incubite . AblaZ and Kahl also joined the electro-goth band, which released an album in early 2014. When Berkefeld left Stahlmann in autumn 2013 for professional reasons, his position was taken over by Freiwald, so that from then on both bands were on the road with the same line-up.

On November 18, 2014 Freiwald announced that he would end his collaboration with the bands Stahlmann and Sündenklang due to time constraints.

On February 7th, 2015, drummer Niklas Kahl left the band because he was “increasingly unable to identify with the band”. Together with Freiwald he wants to be active in a new project called Erdling .

At the 2015 Rockharz Festival, Johannes (Duese) Thon from Das Ich made his debut as a live keyboardist and accompanied Stahlmann for several shows. Since the beginning of 2016 Stahlmann have been performing again without a live keyboard player. In November 2017, Max and Frank announced that they would withdraw from the project due to lack of time. While Frank has been active with Schattenmann since 2016, Max founded his own project with Djatlow Pass .

On January 9th, 2020 AblaZ announced in a statement "having to take a longer break with Stahlmann" because he wants to concentrate on his project Nachtblut .

style

The band combines new German hardness with elements from alternative metal and electronic music .

reception

The debut album Stahlmann was recorded mixed. Music reviews criticized the “stoic rhythms, EBM rudiments and simple riffs”, but praised the “creativity” of Stahlmann's debut album . Metal.de rates the album as "too smoothly ironed, too radio-compatible and without real rough edges". The SPINE praises the singing of the debut album Stahlmann , but like other magazines criticizes the lack of originality.
