The eponymous staple (German: staple ) is one of the most typical office items of all.

history

The company was founded in 1985 by Tom Stemberg, a former director of a supermarket chain, and Leo Kahn. According to the company's history, Stemberg is said to have torn the ribbon of his printer while printing a business plan on July 4th ( US national holiday ), whereupon he had the idea of founding a supermarket for office products after searching in vain for a replacement. Until then, office supplies for small consumers were only sold by small retailers who, unlike large supermarkets, were not open around the clock. Staples' business model was a classic cash & carry concept with long opening times, a wide range of products and low prices thanks to volume purchase and sales with a specialization in office supplies.

Stemberg's concept was initially viewed with skepticism, the need for large office markets was doubted. Nevertheless, the first Staples wholesale store , the world's first wholesale store for office supplies, opened on May 1, 1986 in the Brighton district of Boston . Staples was supported by Bain Capital , the company of the later politician Mitt Romney . The Staples model proved to be a great success, and within two years 20 additional office wholesalers from various providers were founded.

When it went public in 1989, the company raised $ 36 million, and the Staples Direct shipping division was founded in the same year . From 1990 the company opened up the market in the western United States , and in 1991 the first Staples store opened in Canada . Expansion into Europe began in 1992 through a joint venture with the British company Kingfisher .

Staples entered the German market in 1993, initially through a cooperation with MAXI-Papier . Both the British and German partners were taken over by Staples in 1996. In 1996, in the tenth year of existence, the company opened its 500th store. The online presence staples.com was established in 1998. The 1000th store was opened in 1999, and at the same time Staples pushed ahead with its European expansion through acquisitions in Germany , the Netherlands and Portugal . The company has been the world's largest supplier of office supplies since 2002. With another wave of takeovers (companies in Austria and Denmark ), Staples expanded its position on the European market and gained a foothold in both Asia ( China ) and Latin America.

Since 1999, Staples has given its name to the multifunctional arena Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In December 2016 it was announced that the American hedge fund Cerberus Capital will take over the European business. At the same time, the UK retail business was sold to Hilco Capital.

At the end of 2017, the American private equity firm Sycamore Partners took over the company for USD 10.25 per share (a total of USD 6.9 billion).
