The Catholic parish church of Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross), also Exaltation de la Sainte-Croix ( Exaltation of the Cross) or Sainte-Agathe , named after Saint Agatha of Catania , in Ris , a municipality in the Puy-de-Dôme department in the French region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes , is one of the oldest churches in Auvergne . It was built in several phases between the end of the 10th and 12th centuries. Wall paintings dating from the 11th to 15th centuries have been preserved in the church . In 1995, the church was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

The church originally belonged to a priory of Cluny Abbey founded in 952. The first church building, to which the narthex probably goes back, was built between 979 and 985. The sacristy was added in the 14th century and the portal was renewed in the 15th century. A new bell tower was built between 1825 and 1827 and in 1881 the vaults and walls were reinforced. The church has been used as a parish church since 1287.

Exterior construction

On the west facade of the church rises the bell tower, in the basement of which a pointed arched portal framed by archivolts is cut. A niche with a Madonna figure opens above the portal. The upper floor of the tower is broken through by arched sound arcades . The side walls of the nave structure buttresses and arched windows.

inner space

The nave has three aisles and ends in a semicircular closed choir in the east . The elevation is two-story. Round arched windows have been cut over the wide arched arcades, which rest on cross-shaped pillars and which open the central nave to the aisles. The central nave is covered by a barrel vault supported by massive belt arches . The very narrow aisles have quarter tons. The choir is illuminated by three arched windows, a circular window opens above the middle one.

Murals

Apostle Peter

The wall paintings were created between the 11th and 15th centuries. You put u. a. the Archangel Michael , the Apostle Peter , the stoning of St. Stephen , St. Margaret with the dragon and the martyrdom of St. Agatha . The scene of the Visitation is dated to the 15th century.
