Parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine

The Catholic parish church of Sainte-Marie-Madeleine in Marcoussis , a municipality in the department of Essonne in the French region of Ile-de-France , was built in the early 15th century on the site of a former priory. In 1965, the church dedicated to Mary Magdalene was added to the list of architectural monuments in France as a Monument historique .

history

Bell tower

Around 1140, the Abbey of Saint-Wandrille in Normandy established a priory here. The first church building, from which the Romanesque substructure of the bell tower has been preserved, probably dates from this time . Between 1402 and 1408 the then lord of Marcoussis, Jean de Montaigu , had a new choir built. At the end of the 15th century, under the new landlord Louis Malet de Graville, the nave and the octagonal structure of the bell tower were built.

architecture

Exterior construction

The west facade in the style of the Flamboyant Gothic is framed by massive buttresses and crowned by a roof turret . A three-lane tracery window is cut into the middle of the facade . The portal opens underneath it and frames a keel arch studded with crabs . On the north side approaches of arches can be seen, which remind of the unrealized plan to add side aisles.

The single-nave nave extends over three bays . It is covered by a ribbed vault, on whose keystones the coat of arms of the Graville family can be seen. On the right-hand side under the tower there is a chapel covered with a groin vault , which dates back to the construction of the church in the 12th century. The patronage chapel on the left has a ribbed vault, the ribs of which rest on consoles on which prophets are depicted. The recently closed choir is also covered by a ribbed vault, on the keystones you can see the coat of arms of the Montaigu family. The consoles that support the vault ribs are decorated with angels holding coats of arms.

Leaded glass window

The leaded glass window in the choir consists of three lancets depicting the visit of Jesus to the house of Mary and Martha . Mary, who according to Catholic tradition is also equated with Mary Magdalene, the sinner who anointed Jesus' feet, listens carefully to Jesus while her sister Martha prepares the meal. When Martha complains that Mary should help her with her work, Jesus replies that Mary has chosen the better. The window comes from Nicolas Lorin's workshop and bears the signature V (eu) ve N. LORIN CHARTRES 1887 .

Two windows were created in Léon Daumont Tournel's glass painting workshop in Paris and bear the signature L.Dt. TOURNEL ET SES FILS PARIS 1899 . A window shows the feast in Simon's house, at which Mary Magdalene anoints Jesus' feet. The theme of the other window is the resurrection of Lazarus , the brother of Mary and Martha.

The window above the gallery with the representation of Maria Immaculata is dated to the year 1869 and bears the signature MAZIER ET E. FOREST . The coats of arms of the previous landlords, the Montaigu, Graville, Iliers d'Entragues and Esclignac families can be seen in the tracery of the window.
