Steep (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Steep is a computer game from the developer Ubisoft Annecy , which was developed in collaboration with Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Kiev .

It deals with extreme sports and focuses on an open game world in which you can practice winter sports with and against other players . The game was released by Ubisoft on December 2, 2016 for Microsoft Windows , Xbox One and Sony's PlayStation 4 .

Gameplay

Steep is an extreme sports video game that takes place in an open game world that is modeled on the Alps and Alaska . Players have the opportunity to explore the world freely. Their character, players can be present in the first-person or third-person perspective control. In addition, a so-called GoPro view can be used during the races . There are four main activities available to the player, skiing , wingsuit flying , snowboarding and paragliding .

There are four types of game types. The exploration style offers the opportunity to discover new places and challenges. In the freestyle style , the player is rewarded for precision and accuracy in the stunts. In the bone collector style , the player is rewarded for high-risk stunts and ridiculous accidents. The freerider style describes a mix of the three other styles.

The game focuses on online multiplayer . All players share the same game world and take part in different challenges at the same time. With the "collision feature" it is possible to collide with other players. The "Mountain View" mode allows you to move faster in the game world. The landscape is shown from above and players have the opportunity to enter the world at various points, called drop zones . The map also allows you to discover different locations and hidden areas that can be found with the help of binoculars.

Rating

Steep has a trick system through which players receive points for performing special tricks, such as “grabbing the snowboard while jumping”. If players deliver an excellent performance in a race, they will receive a medal as a reward. If you fall instead, you can start another attempt and see how many g-forces your character was exposed to in the accident. Players can use features like pause , rewind, and repeat to take screenshots. You can share them with the community. You can also see statistics about your own performance and that of other players.

Development and history

The game was developed by Ubisoft Annecy, a French studio that previously developed the multiplayer modes for the Assassin's Creed franchise and the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell franchise. Steep is their first in-house production. There was a cooperation with Ubisoft Studios in Kiev and Montpellier .

The project started towards the beginning of 2013. The AnvilNext 2.0 engine was used as the basis for the game .

A Nintendo Switch version was originally also in the works. In August 2018, however, it was announced that development of the version had been discontinued in order to be able to supply the main platforms with new content. At E3 2017, Ubisoft announced an expansion to the Winter Olympics game called Steep: Road to the Olympics , which was released on December 5, 2017.

Swedish freeride skier Matilda Rapaport was killed in an avalanche in the Chilean Andes while filming the game in July 2016 .
