Stefan Władysław Bryła (born August 17, 1886 in Kraków , † December 3, 1943 in Warsaw , Poland ) was a Polish designer , engineer , publicist and member of the Sejm .

life and work

Stefan Bryła, son of Eligia Maria b. Chrzanowska and Paweł Bryła, studied engineering at the TU Lemberg (then KuK ) until 1908 . Subsequently, with the support of the Kraków Akademia Umiejętności , he expanded his theoretical and practical knowledge at the Technical University of Berlin , the École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in Paris and London . In 1909 he did his doctorate at the Technical University of Lemberg and one year later became a private lecturer at this university. In 1911 he went to Canada and the USA , where he a. a. 1912 participated in the planning and construction of the Woolworth Building in New York . In 1913 he began his return journey via Hawaii , Japan , Korea , China , Manchuria and Siberia . He spent the First World War in Kiev (then Russia ), where he a. a. from 1915 head of the Association of Polish Engineers. In 1918 he moved back to Lwów - as the city of Lemberg in the re-established Poland was called - took part in the battles for Lwów in November 1918 (with the Ukrainians and later Soviets) and then taught bridge building theory at the TU there, since 1921 as a professor. In 1932 he became a member of the Polska Akademia Umiejętności and in 1934 professor of construction at the Technical University in Warsaw . Bryła developed a. a. Basic methods of welding steel structures. From 1926 he was a member of the Sejm, and in 1927 he built the first welded road bridge in the world, the Maurzyce Bridge . He also designed the first Polish skyscrapers : the Drapacz Chmur in Katowice and the Prudential building in Warsaw.

Stefan Bryła wrote numerous specialist and textbooks , but also travel reports (e.g. "Jeden dzień w Jokohamie. Kartki z podróży do Japonji" (A day in Jokohama. Travel notes from Japan, 1913) and "Daleki Wschód" (Far East, 1923 )).

During the Second World War he taught at the secret underground universities. On November 16, 1943, he and his entire family were arrested by the Germans in Warsaw for this, shot in a public street execution on December 3 and buried in Warsaw's Powązki cemetery .

  • Chairman of the Association of Polish Engineers and Technicians in Russia (1915–1918)
  • Member of the Permanent International Commission on Bridges and Engineering Structures (1929)
  • Corresponding member (1932) and full member (1935) of the Academy of Technical Sciences.

The Polish Association of Civil Engineers annually awards the Stefan Bryła Prize for special scientific achievements in the fields of engineering and construction.
