Stefan Fassbinder (born August 12, 1966 in Munich ) is a German historian and local politician ( Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen ). He is the Lord Mayor of the Hanseatic City of Greifswald .

Life

Stefan Fassbinder attended primary school in Algiers (Algeria), then the Hans-und-Sophie-Scholl-Gymnasium in Ulm . He was a conscientious objector and did community service . He then studied at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg and at the University of Aix-Marseille in Aix-en-Provence in France. In 1996 Fassbinder became Dr. phil. PhD. In the same year he took on a position as exhibition secretary in the museum in the Kaiserpfalz in Paderborn . Since 1999 he has been a historian at the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald.

In Greifswald, Stefan Fassbinder was involved in local politics. In 2004 he was one of the founders of the Greifswald Alliance for Families and since 2008 has worked as an expert resident in the Citizenship Committee for Culture and Economy. In 2009 he was elected to the citizenry. In the citizenry he was active in the finance and auditing committee. From 2011 he was group leader of the Greens in the citizenry.

Fassbinder was a member of the district board of Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen from 2002 to 2009 and 2014. In 2011, as a candidate in the district council election in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district, he received 9.9 percent of the votes cast.

In the runoff election for mayor on May 10, 2015, Fassbinder won with a narrow majority of 15 votes with a turnout of 35.27 percent. He stood for an alliance that, in addition to his own party Bündnis 90 / Die Grünen, also included the Left , the SPD and the Pirate Party Germany , and replaced the CDU at the head of the Hanseatic city for the first time since the political change . Since the election was contested because of irregularities in a polling station (the doormat responsible for it later became part of the collection of the Pomeranian State Museum), he was not able to take office as planned in early August 2015. In mid-September 2015 he announced his resignation from the Greifswald citizenship in order to concentrate on his role as Lord Mayor. On September 28, 2015, the citizens of Greifswald declared the election valid. He was handed over on October 30, 2015. Since 2018, he has been a member of the main committee and the presidium of the German Association of Cities .
