Steffen Krauss (2007)

Steffen Krauss (born March 21, 1965 in Schlema ; † April 9, 2008 in Aue ) was a German football player.

Life

Steffen Krauss played for the football club Wismut Aue from 1973 to 1990 . In 1983 he played a total of six games (one goal) for the U-18 youth team of the GDR (including Ulf Kirsten , Olaf Marschall and Matthias Lindner ) and from 1984 to 1985 a total of 15 games (one goal) for the U-21 team GDR (with Ulf Kirsten, Olaf Marschall, Andreas Thom and Thomas Doll, among others ).

While his older brother Andreas Krauss only had two short appearances in the GDR league from 1983 to 1984 , Steffen played a total of 168 league appearances (15 goals) and 20 FDGB cup games (6 goals) for Wismut Aue. He played his first league game on February 19, 1983 at Dynamo Dresden (0-2). He scored his first league goal on March 17, 1984 in the home game against FC Karl-Marx-Stadt , when he marked the 2-0 final score. Krauss played the last league game on the last day of the 1989/90 season on May 26, 1990 at BFC Dynamo (4-1). Despite his goal to 2-1 lead, the club had to relegate to the GDR league after this season .

In 1985 Steffen Krauss played two international matches for the GDR national team . He made his debut on April 17, 1985 in Frankfurt / Oder against Norway (1-0). Three weeks later, on May 8, 1985, the GDR selection in Copenhagen lost the international match against Denmark 4-1. Krauss was replaced by coach Bernd Stange already at half-time , although the whole team was overwhelmed by the skill of the Danes with Michael Laudrup , Allan Simonsen , Søren Lerby or Morten Olsen . The international career was quickly over.

From 1986 to 1987 Krauss then completed 15 games (1 goal) for the GDR Olympic team. With her he could not qualify for the 1988 Olympic Games . Internationally, he also played all six UEFA Cup games for Wismut Aue. In the 1985/86 season, the team was eliminated in the first round against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk . Two seasons later, Aue ended in the second round against Flamurtari Vlora despite a golden goal from Steffen Krauss in the first leg.

After the relegation of the Auer, Steffen Krauß played seven games (no goal) in the GDR league (season B) for Wismut Aue in 1990/91. He played his last game for Wismut Aue on October 27, 1990 in the home game against FSV Wacker 90 Nordhausen , when he was substituted on after 40 minutes. Already at this time he was suffering from a mental illness that made him less resilient and had to take medication. When Krauss was more or less healthy again, he later played for several years at SV Hundshübel and 1. FC Rodewisch and from 1996 again at the district league club FC 1910 Lößnitz . In addition to goalkeeper Jörg Weißflog and Harald Mothes , Krauss was considered one of the outstanding players in the Wismut team in the 1980s.

After his football career, Steffen Krauss took over his father's forge in 2000 . In March 2008, he suffered first- and second-degree burns in an explosion in the forge. On the night of April 8th to 9th, 2008, he committed suicide by jumping out of a window on the 6th floor of the hospital. He left behind his partner and a seven-year-old daughter.
