Steffy Stahl , also Steffi Stahl , bourgeois Stefanie Stahl , (born on May 26, 1909 in Lemberg , Empire Austria-Hungary ; died on September 21, 1993 in Venezuela ) was an Austrian dancer , dance teacher and choreographer .

Life

Steffy Stahl was born as the daughter of Abraham Adolf Stahl and his wife Regina Eugenie Stahl (later mentioned in Venezuela under the name Regina Bodenstein de Stahl) in Lemberg, the capital of Galicia . Her father had a doctorate in law and worked as a lawyer and criminal defense attorney in Lviv from 1910 . During the First World War he was obliged to do military service and in 1915 was appointed "Landsturm-Oberleutnant-Auditor" [= public prosecutor at a military court]. He died at the age of 38 in July 1916 in the hospital in Cholm from a "wound suffered in the exercise of his duty in the northern theater of war". Her mother is listed in the “Official Health Resort List” of the “Kurort Baden bei Wien” of September 3, 1927 as an “Official from Vienna”.

Steffy Stahl received piano and music lessons from private teachers in Vienna and attended lectures in anatomy and physiology at the University of Vienna . She completed her dance studies at the Academy for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna with the dancer, choreographer and dance teacher Gertrud Bodenwieser .

After completing her training, Stahl worked as a teacher for rhythmic gymnastics in Vienna. In the early 1930s she opened her own gymnastics and dance school, "Steffy Stahl's Studio for Rhythmics, Gymnastics, Acrobatics, Ballet and Tap Dance", which she ran in changing rooms in Josefstädter Strasse and Tigergasse in the 8th district of Josefstadt , and where she taught children and adults. Her children's ballet also danced at events in the Vienna Konzerthaus .

She was a member of the modern dance group founded by Gertrud Bodenwieser in 1934 , which is considered to be the first modern dance formation in Europe. She also founded her own dance ensemble with dancers, with which she performed publicly. Steffy Stahl and her ensemble can be seen in a dance choreography in the short sound film "Lebenslied" , which the Viennese director Robert Reich shot in the Vienna Burggarten and in the Vienna Schönbrunn Ateliers. In July 1931 she opened her annual "summer courses for gymnastics, acrobatics and dance" in the lido of Gars am Kamp , for which she later insulted in the press as "Jewish Resi [sic!] Stahl" in the course of the anti-Semitic agitation against Jewish artists and was defamed.

After the " Anschluss of Austria ", she emigrated to Venezuela via Italy in August 1938 at the invitation of the government and the local education ministry. There she successfully continued her career as a dance teacher. She is considered one of the early artistic "forerunners" of Venezuelan ballet life. She became the director of a dance education program at kindergartens and elementary schools in Caracas and worked as a dance teacher and trainer for dance teachers at municipal and state schools in Caracas. She was the director of the "Studio de Arte Coreografico Caracas". Stahl developed her own holistic learning system and worked as a dance choreographer primarily for children's ballets, which were performed in particular with hundreds of children at public events.

In 1950 she was awarded the Venezuelan State Order Francisco de Miranda . She also received the Order of 27 de Junio . In March 1990, her work was publicly recognized by the National Council of Culture (Consejo Nacional de la Cultura) of Venezuela at a ceremony in the Teatro Nacional de Venezuela. Her book El amanecer de la danza was published in 1992 by the Venezuelan Ministry of Culture .

The Austrian literary and cultural scientist Andreas Weigel dedicated several articles to the dancer Steffy Stahl in January and February 2020 on his culture blog "Garser Tourismusgeschichte", which appeared on Facebook , and remembered her life in historical documents, newspaper clippings and photos.
