history

In the vicinity of the place there were probably the first settlements as early as the Neolithic Age, as finds show. It is believed that Stein was founded in Roman times . The first written mention of Stein in 1252 comes from the parish church records. In the 14th century, Stein was owned by the Walger von Bisingen. Later the rule passed to the Lords of Ow zu Bodelshausen . They sold the place to Württemberg around 1446/1453 . The succession of ownership changed to the Counts of Zollern in 1472 . The places Bechtoldsweiler and Sickingen were assigned to the office stone from the 14th to the 16th century.

In 1976, the mayor at the time, Gerd Schollian, discovered a Roman estate northwest of the village. Archaeologists uncovered the portico villa ( villa rustica ) that was built between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD .

In the vicinity of the Roman estate there are also traces of medieval settlements between the 12th and 15th centuries. Remains of an early medieval castle were found south of the village, which was probably the seat of the local nobility between the 10th and 14th centuries.

With the regional reform in Baden-Württemberg , Stein was incorporated into the city of Hechingen on April 1, 1972.
