Stephen McKinley Henderson (born August 31, 1949 in Kansas City , Missouri ) is an American actor and theater director .

life and career

Stephen Henderson completed his education and acting training at Lincoln University , Juilliard School and Purdue University, among others . The African-American with distinctive facial features made his film debut as early as 1979, but was almost exclusively a theater actor for a long time. He gained recognition on stage with roles in plays by August Wilson . His portrayal of a chatty driver in Wilson's Jitney earned him a Drama Desk Award . Henderson first appeared on Broadway in 2001 and has since appeared in several productions.

It was only since the turn of the millennium that Henderson has been increasingly seen in film and television. He appeared as a judge in several episodes of the Law & Order series . Since 2011, Henderson has played supporting roles in five films that have been nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture . For example, he played the house servant of Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln (2012) and the supervisor of Casey Affleck's character in Manchester by the Sea (2016). He had a bigger supporting role as Jim Bono , the best friend of Denzel Washington's character, in the drama Fences (2016) based on the play of the same name by August Wilson. Henderson had previously played this role on Broadway , which earned him a 2010 Tony Award nomination.

Henderson also works as a theater director and teaches acting at the University at Buffalo .
