The Steppach is an approximately 5 km long stream on the district of the small town of Gaildorf in the district of Schwäbisch Hall in north-eastern Baden-Württemberg , which flows into the middle Kocher from the right and north-east just below the district of Großaltdorf . The Steppach upper reaches before the village of Eutendorf am Lauf is called Wertbach .

geography

Upper course Wertbach

The Wertbach arises on the western slope of the western ridge of the Limpurger Mountains to the northeast of the large erosion bay of the Kocher river around Gaildorf. The brook has created its own small erosion bay behind the edge of the Kocherbucht, which is in the west and north from the Schneitberg ( 478  m above sea level ), in the east from the plateau of the Limpurger mountains around the coal road and in the south from its projection to the west Eutendorfer fall is limited. The source of the Wertbach is less than 250 meters away from the Höhenstraße at almost 500  m above sea level. NHN on the western step edge drop of the 514.4  m above sea level. NHN high Streitberg , which bulges only imperceptibly in the direction of the ridge from northwest to southeast.

The Wertbach initially runs west in a steep cliff to the valley and then increases after a good kilometer to about 385  m above sea level. NHN opens its left source stream from the Geißklinge , which is almost as long as it is , which rises in a similar source location in the southeast at the approach of the spur to the fall and even contributes a little more catchment area. Then the Wertbach turns in the direction of Goatblade to the northwest and only experiences another kilometer further, meanwhile it has emerged from the forest into a wide hollow valley, in which it initially flows accompanied by wood, an approximately 1.5 km long inlet this time from the northeast from the upper edge of the step . At this mouth to about 367  m above sea level. NHN , it has just left its northernmost point behind and now turns as a winding and almost vegetation-free ditch around the left-hand northern foothill Zipfer of the western spur to fall to the south-south-west.

Before the outskirts of Eutendorf only short slope channels flow into it. Between the Zipfer on the left, where the woodland continues to descend, and the Schneitberg on the right, where the tree line is mostly over 410  m above sea level. NHN is, the open corridor of the valley reaches a width of partly over 400 meters. After a total of 2.9 km and with almost half of the Steppach catchment area behind it, the Wertbach emerges from the northern arch of its own erosion bay on the outskirts of Eutendorf and is now called Steppach below .

Downstream Steppach

The Steppach passes through the village of Eutendorf after leaving the Limpurger Mountains on the southern course, which it then continues a little in its flat hollow. Then it bends southwest in front of a hill; from now on it is constantly followed by a small tree gallery. After the long tributary of the lower reaches of Bilmersbach from the left and east, the stream goes into a small northwest loop, at the summit of which it passes the Eutendorf residential area Steppach , which is on the right above the bank . On the short path to the south that follows, the forest then covers the slopes of the valley, which is now more than 40 meters deep compared to the surrounding heights, in which, next to a small trail of the cave, lark spur and other plants that can be found on limestone blades stand. Then the Steppach flows 5.1 km below the Wertbach source and about one kilometer below the river bridge from Groß to Kleinaltdorf and about 200 meters after the return of the Großaltdorfer Mühlkanal at 317.9  m above sea level. NN southwest into a right and northeast loop of the Kocher .

Catchment area

The Steppach drains an area of around 8.2 km² in two sub-areas of the Swabian-Franconian Forest Mountains natural area ; the upper part in the Limpurger Bergem and the lower part in the Gaildorf Basin in front of this , an inner erosion bay of the Kocher. The catchment area extends in the longest line 4.1 km from its northeastern tip above the source of the brook from the Kohlhäule , which lies close to the coal road in its section between Mühlstein and the Dreikaiserlinde, to the mouth at its southwest tip. Across it it is a maximum of 3.0 km wide.

On the west side, beyond the Schneitberg, which tends to the south, the Adelbach, which is almost parallel to the middle and lower reaches of the Steppach, flows only about 2.5 km below it to the Kocher. Behind the northern watershed on the rear Schneitberg, the Adelbach's large tributary Antebach runs westwards. The eastern watershed on the plateau separates Fischach from the catchment area of the Bühler tributary ; the immediate competitors belong almost everywhere to the brook system of the Benzenbach and Bühlbach . In the southeast near Winzenweiler the Eisbach competes via its right source branch Pfannenbach with the far upward Kocher, on the southern one there are only inconspicuous tributaries to this river apart from the Hagersbach, which falls steeply down the west eaves to the confluence with the Kocher in Gaildorf .

Nearly 20% of the catchment area in the east part of the pretty slick, complete with forest-covered plateau of the mountain landscape, which mostly at an altitude of 495- 515  m above sea level. NHN lies. In its long spur Schneitberg , which starts to the west and ends in the south, on the north and north-west edge of the catchment area, it falls to the upper end of the spur at about 470  m above sea level. NHN , while the greatest heights are reached on the long east side: 514.4  m above sea level. NN on the Streitberg above the source of the main branch, 517.3  m above sea level. NN just before the southeast corner above the origin of the Bilmersbach and a maximum of 522.1  m above sea level. NN on the Herrschel on the southeast corner close to the eaves above the upper Breitwiesenbach.

Most of the waste to the Kocher Valley is also forested, meaning that around 60% of the area is used for forestry purposes.

The open, hilly landscape in front of the foot of the Limpurger Mountains below 380  m above sea level. NHN makes up a little over 20% of the area. Here the village Eutendorf is after the exit of the Steppach from their curved mountain valley on the river bank, the flat right slope and at the bottom Escarpment to overthrow the left. In addition, there are only two very much smaller living spaces in the catchment area, Steppach with its two farms on the right hand side of the Unterlauf shortly before the confluence and the individual farm Schweizerhof on the lower meadow slope between Bilmersbach and Breitwiesenbach.

Almost the entire catchment area lies within the Eutendorf district; Around 7 hectares near the mouth to the west of Steppach are located on the suburb of Ottendorf , also in Gaildorf, which adjoins it to the northwest, and on the flat bulge of the Streitberg , the Obersontheim suburb of Oberfischach has at most a narrow strip of less than 1 ha.

Inflow system

Origin of the upper reaches value stream called Steppach near the Kohlenstraße the upper western slope of the armed mountain to slightly below 500  m above sea level. NHN . The stream initially flows west in its rapidly deepening forest edge .

  • Source branch from the goat blade , from the left and southeast to over 385  m above sea level. NHN , 0.9 km and around 0.6 km². Arises to the north at the approach of the plateau spur to the Eutendorfer fall in the west at about 490  m above sea level NHN . This source branch, which also flows through a steep forest blade, has a little less length and a little more catchment area at the confluence than the main branch, which is 1.1 km long, only drained 0.5 km² and here changes to the northwest flow direction of its tributary.
  • Inflow from the Kohlreute , from the left and south to 381  m above sea level. NHN about 300 meters before the forest exit, 0.5 km and about 0.3 km². Highest source at about 425  m above sea level. NHN at the foot of the Mannshalde above the Kohlreute .
  • Waldklingenbach from the Kohlhäule , from the right and northeast to about 367  m above sea level. NHN almost at the northernmost point of the run in the corridor, 1.5 km and around 1.3 km². Arises at about 490  m above sea level. NHN in the Kohlhäule south at the approach of the Schneitberg spur of the plateau.
    • RiverIcon-SmallLake.svgFlows through at over 410  m above sea level. NHN a forest pond just before the edge of the field, about 0.1 ha.

  • Slope spring runoff, from the right and northwest to over 365  m above sea level. NHN shortly after the previous one, 0.3 km. Arises at about 410  m above sea level. NHN at the edge of the forest. Here the Wertbach already flows southwest.
  • Hangbach, from the left and east to 356.1  m above sea level. NN on the northern outskirts of Eutendorf, around 0.5 km. Arises below 390  m above sea level. NHN at the southern Zipfer .
Here the brook upper course Wertbach - which is 2.9 km long and has a catchment area of 3.9 km² - changes its name to Steppach . The Steppach then runs south through the village.
  • Bilmersbach , from the left and from the east to about 330  m above sea level. NHN shortly before the Gaildorf-Eutendorfer residential area Steppach on a field path bridge, 2.9 km and 2.7 km². Arises at about 502  m above sea level. NHN about 1100 meters northwest of Gaildorf- Winzenweiler on the plateau that is already falling to the west, right next to a hiking trail. At this inlet, the Steppach now flows southwest.
    • Breitwiesenbach , from the left and east to about 350  m above sea level. NHN next to the district road from Eutendorf to Großaltdorf (K 2617), 1.4 km and around 0.7 km². Arises below 500  m above sea level. NHN at the Schweizer- and west of the Brandhalde .

Mouth of the Steppach from the right and northeast to 317.9  m above sea level. NN about 400 meters south of the village of Steppach, located on the northwest loop of its lower reaches, in the northeast loop of the middle Kocher below Gaildorf - Großaltdorf . The brook is 2.2 km long here on its name segment from Eutendorf, 5.1 km from the source of the Wertbach and has a total catchment area of 8.2 km² behind it.

Localities

The sources of the Wertbach and its larger tributaries are completely uninhabited, on the Steppach lower reaches are a village and a residential area:

geology

The sources of the Wertbach and its large tributaries all arise in the transition area of the silica sandstone ( Hassberge Formation ), which stepped up the plateau of the Limpurger Mountains, to the Lower Colorful Marl ( Steigerwald Formation ) in the lying area, in which the upper streams have dug clay blades. After a slope flattening in the reed sandstone ( Stuttgart formation ), which can be seen in places in the terrain , the runs soon reach the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ), in which the Wertbach goes into its north curve and continues to Eutendorf. After a section in the Lettenkeuper ( Erfurt Formation ), it enters the Upper Muschelkalk at its turn on the south-west course , in which it runs through its small north-west arch near Steppach, and then flows into the Kocher in this layer.

The Wertbach arches north of the plateau west spur of the Limpurger Mountains to the Eutendorfer Sturz , where it flows around its deeper northern foothills Zipfer , on which extensive reed sandstone lies. On the steep fall above Eutendorf, in an abandoned quarry , you can see the reed sandstone, which is about 30 meters high here, which is characterized by flood facies and forms mighty banks that are jagged in two directions.

A ravine at the southern tip of the Schneitberg a little upstream on the opposite side of the valley offers a walk through the gypsum keup layers above the base gypsum . At the foot of the Schneitberg waste there is an open gypsum quarry in which apparently no more dismantling takes place.

At the tip of the Bilmersbach- Mündungswinkel there is an abandoned small quarry in the Upper Muschelkalk, which is overgrown with forest, but still reveals the old quarrying bottom under partly newer deposits.
