action

The marine biologist Martin Schell is planning a polar expedition. The journalist who is supposed to report on the expedition is Martin's childhood sweetheart Nina. Another problem is Martin's father, whom his sister delivers to him for three weeks. The relationship with his father has never been good and, after he wants to move him to an age-appropriate care facility, the agile, headstrong pensioner breaks away there and cheats his way onto the research ship as an alleged reporter. There he is quickly discovered by Martin and kept on board with the permission of the captain.

Tensions soon arise between Martin's friend Doreen, who is also on the ship, and Nina, because Doreen notices the looks between the two. Martin's father is also trying to rekindle the old fire because he liked Nina even then. Martin tries to keep a professional distance from her, but unconsciously he seeks her closeness more and more often. Nina, however, is relatively dismissive and wants Martin to stay out of her life. When asked about a friend or her daughter, she only answers shortly. Martin had cheated on her with another woman at the time, which has had an aftermath to this day. She fights against her old feelings, but when Martin confesses to her how sorry he is for all this, a reconciliation is near. Doreen also realizes more and more how hopeless it is to fight against an old love.

Right now, Martin's father suffers a heart attack and is flown to a clinic in a helicopter. In his suitcase there is a letter in which he is reconciled with his son. He had enjoyed the polar journey very much and sensed that his time might be running out to be able to make peace with Martin. He always suffered from the fact that his son did not want to take over the installation company he had laboriously built up, but rather went to college. It was only on board the ship that he realized how right it was for Martin to go his own way. Since Martin accompanied his father to the hospital, he uses his visit to the mainland to see Nina's daughter, who was left in the care of a neighbor by her mother for the time of the polar expedition. After asking Julia about her date of birth, he realizes that he has to be her father.

When Nina returns from the expedition, she has to let her daughter ask her why she had lied to her over the years and cheated on her father. Without further ado, Julia secretly leaves the apartment and visits Martin at the institute, because she found this address in her mother's files. Martin is unsure what to do, but his recovering father encourages him and he proposes marriage to Nina.

criticism

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv praised: “An old, lost love that is budding again. It has been seen thousands of times, but not like in Stars Above the Ice! The banality of the dramaturgical whole is casually played away [by the actors] in wonderfully intimate scenes. "

For the lexicon of international films , Sterne über dem Eis was “an elaborately staged off-the-shelf (television) romance about the usual great feelings that are underpinned with humorous interludes”.
