geography

The Stolzenhagen district lies in a landscape shaped by the Ice Age. Stolzenhagen borders in the north on the district of Uckermark (Stolpe, Gellmersdorf), in the west on Lüdersdorf , in the south on Lunow and in the east on the Oder valley. The Oder forms the state border with Poland. The "Unteres Odertal" national park begins to the north and east of the town .

history

The first traces of settlement in the vicinity date from the Neolithic Age. The two barrows to the west and south-west of the village were probably created during this time . During the Bronze Age , the great castle wall on the edge of the Oder valley was built . Its oval plateau of around 150 × 80 meters indicates that there was an important facility here at that time. However, the name of the bearer of this culture has not been passed down. Germanic tribes later settled in the Uckermark and left this area again during the migration of peoples between the 4th and 6th centuries. In the 6th century, Slavs began to immigrate from the east. Several settlements are known, including on the edge of the Oder valley between Stolzenhagen and Lunow. The Bronze Age ramparts were not used by the Slavs, although there was a Slavic Kietz right next to it .

The time of the establishment of the place Stolzenhagen cannot be precisely determined. The Slavic Kietz already existed before the German village was established. The early German settlement of the southern Uckermark by the Askanians began in the second half of the 12th century from the south-west. From the north, the influence of the Pomeranian dukes extended to the neighboring town of Stolpe , where the castle tower, which is still in existence today, was built around 1180. The oldest building in Stolzenhagen is the church. It was built around 1230 as a fortified church. It got its current appearance in 1737, when the medieval stone building was extended by a tower built on the south side.

In 1315 Stolzenhagen was first mentioned in writing in a boundary description. According to a document from the Bishop of Brandenburg, the village belonged to the Cistercian monastery Chorin in 1335 . This fact was only confirmed in 1341 by a margravial document. In 1375 Stolzenhagen was named in the land book of Charles IV with 28 hooves. In 1536 the Chorin Monastery sold the properties to the Elector Joachim II. In the same year, he enfeoffed the Oderberg governor Wolf von Fronhöfer with Stolzenhagen. Until 1945, Stolzenhagen remained a manor under different owners . The farming village of Stolzenhagen also existed.

In the first years of the Thirty Years War the place was spared. But from 1637 there was also looting and murder here. In addition, there were many plague victims during this time. In 1730 the construction of the manor house (castle) began. The ownership of the manor was divided among settlers in the course of the land reform in 1946. In 1952, with the dissolution of the states and the formation of districts in the GDR, Stolzenhagen initially belonged to the Angermünde district as before . In the same year the LPG "Vorwärts" was founded. In 1957 the place was incorporated into the Eberswalde district and since 1993 has been part of the Barnim district, which was newly formed from the Eberswalde and Bernau districts. On March 1, 2002, there was a merger with the neighboring town of Lunow to form the community of Lunow-Stolzenhagen .
