Stork BV is a Dutch mechanical and plant engineering company with headquarters in Naarden ( Gooise Meren municipality ) in North Holland .
history
The company was founded under the name Machinefabriek Gebroeders Stork & Co. in Borne in 1865 under the leadership of Charles Theodorus Stork. He was already running a small weaving mill and had noticed that the need for textile machines was increasing sharply and saw a profitable business as a machine manufacturer. In 1868 the young company moved to Hengelo .
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Stork grew into one of the leading mechanical engineering companies in the Netherlands. During the Second World War , the Hengelo plant became known as the starting point for the so-called April-May strike against the policies of the German occupying power.
In 1954, Stork merged with the Dutch machine and vehicle construction company Werkspoor . The joint company then traded as Verenigde Machinefabrieken Stork-Werkspoor ( VMF for short ). Under the umbrella of VMF, Stork concentrated on machine and plant construction and Werkspoor on vehicle construction.
In 1968 the activities in the field of plant and apparatus construction were strengthened by the takeover of the manufacturer Bronswerk . The smaller companies Nolte (1989) and Comprimo (1994) were also taken over. Overall, however, the 1960s to 1990s were characterized by a sales crisis in the heavy industry sector and a sharp reduction in production capacities and job cuts.
In 1992 VMF Stork was listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange as Stork NV .
In 1996 Stork took over parts of the insolvent aircraft manufacturer Fokker and has continued them under the company Fokker Aviation .
In 2007 there was a falling out among the shareholders after a major shareholder, the hedge fund Centaurus and Paulson , called for a change of strategy and a sale of businesses. Subsequently, the British investment fund Candover Investments took over the majority of shares in Stork. At the same time, the food technology sector was sold. Under the new main shareholder, Stork withdrew from open stock market trading in 2008 and changed its name from a Naamloze Vennootschap (NV) to a Besloten Vennootschap (BV).
Since a takeover for 695 million euros in 2015, Stork has belonged to the US plant manufacturer Fluor .
