Sublime ( English for sublime ) was a band from Long Beach , California, founded in 1988, which played a mix of punk , ska , dub and reggae . It broke up after the death of the singer Bradley Nowell in May 1996 .
history
Sublime was founded in 1988 by Bradley Nowell , Bud Gaugh and Eric Wilson. After the 1991 demo Jah Won't Pay the Bills , 40 Oz. To Freedom was the band's first official album, released in 1992 on their own Skunk Records label. The debut album stayed in the US alternative charts for some time and the band was able to attract major labels . The next album, Robbin the Hood , was released in 1994 on MCA Records .
Singer and composer Bradley James Nowell died of a heroin overdose on May 25, 1996 - two months before the third and final album Sublime was released. Nowell's death brought the band a boost in popularity. The album Sublime became the most successful in the band's history.
Since Nowell was the driving force behind Sublime, his death marked the end of the band. The two remaining band members, Eric Wilson and Floyd Gaugh, founded the Long Beach Dub Allstars in 1997 , which disbanded in 2002 due to disputes within the band. Wilson later played in LB Shortbus and Gaugh in Dubcat. Gaugh also played in the band Eyes Adrift with Curt Kirkwood , singer and guitarist of the Meat Puppets , and Krist Novoselić , the bassist of Nirvana .
A benefit concert in favor of Nowell's son Jakob James showed that Sublime were not only popular with fans, but also with music colleagues: various bands, including No Doubt and Pennywise , played for Jakob's school fees.
In June 2005 the tribute album Look At All The Love We Found was released. You can hear artists such as Avail , Jack Johnson , No Doubt and Pennywise .
A reunion of the band with the new singer and guitarist Rome Ramirez under the name Sublime was prevented by the Nowell family in 2009. Bradley Nowell had the band name registered as a trademark during his lifetime . The band, in which Eric Wilson is now the last remaining original member, has since performed under the name Sublime With Rome .
