Sun on Sand, composed and arranged by Patrick Zimmerli is an album by saxophonist Joshua Redman and his trio with the string quartet Brooklyn Rider. The work, created as a concept album , interprets eight compositions from a suite by Patrick Zimmerli . The recordings were released on October 4, 2019 on Nonesuch Records .

background

On the album Joshua Redman plays alongside the string quartet with his trio of Scott Colley on double bass and Satoshi Takeishi (percussion). His members of Brooklyn Rider include violinists Johnny Gandelsman and Colin Jacobsen, violist Nicholas Cords, and cellist Eric Jacobsen. For the “Sun on Sand” project, Joshua Redman processed the music of Patrick Zimmerli, whose work combines elements from jazz , classical and contemporary music . All pieces, which had their world premiere in 2014 in London's Wigmore Hall , musically depict the different worlds of expression of light; "Zimmerli tried to depict the compositionally glaring glare, flashing lightning, but also dark, dim twinkling."

Zimmerli had already worked with Redman's duo partner Brad Mehldau on the album Modern Music with Kevin Hays in 2011 . The saxophonist also collaborated with Zimmerli when he created orchestral arrangements of Redman's compositions for Redman's 2013 Nonesuch album Walking Shadows .

reception

The album received consistently positive reviews when it was released; the British Times gave it four stars ("full of melody and variety"). the critic Georg Waßmuth ( SWR2 ) praised: “Zimmerli has put together a suite that is supposed to reflect the light in all its colors and appearances. It goes from the bright flash of lightning through the muted gray in the fog to the dark shadow. Joshua Redman and his ensemble deliver oscillating sounds and moods over and over again. The basic elements of this music can be analyzed soberly, but the new thing that emerges has an irresistible pull. ”On the one hand, Patrick Zimmerli's composition is a meticulously worked out score,“ on the other hand, it is also an invitation to play with the material “, The author continues. While the Brooklyn Rider string quartet often strictly adhere to the bar lines, the double bass, drums and saxophone always take the liberty of improvisation. In the overall impression, however, the music is artfully interwoven and each of the pieces is like a piece.

Ulrich Habersetzer ( BR-Klassik ) is of the opinion that with the Brooklyn Rider string quartet Redman “found great partners on exactly the right wavelength.” Like the saxophonist, the quartet joins forces. The four strings played with great emotion and dedication; it shows her very broad horizon. A light folk and bluegrass touch can be felt again and again. The four strings by no means acted as a carpet of sound , but instead provided “repeated motivic points of contact for the tenor saxophone and also intervened melodically in the action.” For the author, however, the Japanese drummer Satoshi Takeishi and double bass player Scott Colley are the secret stars of the recording; They would determine both the basic coloration and the punchy groove of the pieces. "It is true that not all of Zimmerli's compositional ideas are always sparked," says Habersetzer, "but the powerful, compact interaction and the fire of all involved make Sun on Sand a great pleasure."

Joshua Redman at the 2017 Kongsberg Jazz Festival

Dick Hovenga wrote for London Jazz News that the collaboration between Zimmerli, Redman and Brooklyn Rider was fascinating and always surprising. The eight compositions were very different, and "because Redman has put them together with the famous bassist Scott Colley and the drummer Satoshi Takeisha into a close trio, the strings by Brooklyn Rider sound even more exciting - and somehow looser too." Zimmerli agreed a great gift for writing great multi-layered compositions that sound great in Brooklyn Rider's hands. “What Redman can do with the melodic lines in these heartfelt arrangements is always of the highest quality. He not only impresses with his boldness and inspiration, he also has a strong emotional side. And the way in which Colley and Takeisha work themselves in with real intent is also impressive. ” Sun on Sand , according to the author, is a warm sounding and fantastically rich album. An ideal mix of jazz and modern classical music; it marked "a new high point in Redman's rich discography."

Matt Colar gave the album 4½ (out of five) stars in Allmusic and believes Sun on Sand is an album that crosses the line between jazz and modern classical music. As a composer Zimmerli moves skillfully between exploratory modern creative jazz and more structured classical soundscapes. The opening track “Flash” is “a brisk, spiral-shaped piece in which Redman plays a serpentine melody against an equally spinning string part, reminiscent of a cross-genre mix of Sonny Rollins , Aaron Copland and Steve Reich . The rest of the album is just as engaging. The most impressive aspect of Sun on Sand is how balanced it feels to work together. Redman has the ability and the sound to transport the music, but Brooklyn Rider offers a deeply structured counterpoint while Zimmerli's expansive voice is always present. "
