The Sungkyunkwan University (short SKKU ) is a private South Korean university. With a human and social science faculty campus in Seoul and one of the science faculties in Suwon , Sungkyunkwan University is the oldest university in Asia . It emerged from the historical Seonggyun-gwan school , where young men were educated and trained according to Confucian teachings.
Today the SKKU is one of the best universities in Asia. It ranks 89th worldwide in THE World University Ranking 2020 and 95th in the 2020 QS World University Ranking .
history
Goryeo time
After the expansion of the Kingdom of Goryeo over the entire Korean Peninsula, King Seongjong founded Gukjagam as the highest state educational institution in the then capital of Gaegyeong ( Kaesŏng ) in 992 . 1087 it moved to its longtime headquarters in the today Koryo Songgyungwan mentioned building complex in the northeast of the city. After several renaming it was called Songgyungwan from 1308 to 1358 and again from 1362 .
Joseon time

In 1398 the founder of the Joseon dynasty had the Seonggyun-gwan moved to Hanseong ( Seoul ). Since then, it has been located in Myeongnyun-dong in Jongno-gu District . During the Joseon Dynasty until the Gabo Reforms in 1894, it was the highest educational institution in the empire. Young men from good backgrounds were trained in this school. Future officials or scholars emerged from it, who then later possibly held high positions in the Reich. In order to be accepted into it, the candidates had previously taken one of the various state exams. Most of the apprentices had already attended the written schools ( Seodang ) in their homes, which were also run by Confucian scholars , and had prepared for the exams.
The Seonggyun-gwan and the writing schools spread all over the country played the leading role of education in the Confucianist and central-state Joseon dynasty for centuries. In addition to education, there, as is still the case today at Sungkyunkwan University, Confucian teachings were researched and passed on.
The Seonggyun-gwan is sometimes understood as a temple, but not in the sense of a religious site, since Confucianism is not a religion. But in Seonggyun-gwan Confucian teachers are revered and ceremonies and customs are propagated to the outside world, so that this institution could be perceived as a place of worship.

The Seonggyun-gwan no longer has that importance as a central educational institution. Modern universities of the western kind have taken on its role. On the other hand, people who are convinced of Confucianism try to preserve this traditional institution and, in some cases, to adapt it to the present. The first step was the establishment of the modern university of the same name in 1895. In 1953 it became a comprehensive university . The modern university has of course completely different goals than the time-honored Seonggyun-gwan . In addition, there are still over two hundred state schools across the country that are overseen by Sungkyunkwan University.

Trivia
- At the Sungkyunkwan Shrine on the grounds of Sungkyunkwan University, a ceremony is held twice a year on February 1st and August 1st according to the lunar calendar. This honors the spirit of Confucius , on whose guidelines the government work in Korea of the Joseon Dynasty was based.
- The Sungkyunkwan is the location of the KBS drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal from 2010, in which u. a. the graduate Song Joong-ki plays along.
