Surfer Rosa is the first studio album by the American indie rock band Pixies . It was released on March 21, 1988 on 4AD .
Style and aftermath
Surfer Rosa set a counterpoint to the then successful genres Glam Metal and Sleaze Rock and inspired numerous other musicians with the down-to-earth demeanor of the band, the then new loud / quiet change between verse and chorus and Black Francis' idiosyncratic vocals. Another special feature is the brevity of the tracks, sometimes less than two minutes, and the "drum sound produced by Steve Albini , which still sets standards today in its force" . The Musikexpress therefore calls the band "the most influential rock band of their generation" .
Kurt Cobain , singer and guitarist of Nirvana , said of the 1991 Nirvana album Nevermind , "Basically, I was just trying to imitate the Pixies." Other successful indie rock bands of the 90s ( Pavement , Radiohead ) and 2000s ( Arcade Fire , The Strokes , The White Stripes ) lean on the Pixies and name them as an important influence.
In a list of the best albums of the 80s by Pitchfork Media , the album appears at number 7, in a similar list by Musikexpress at number 2. In the German edition of the 500 best albums of all time according to Rolling Stone , the album lands at number 59. It is also part of the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die . In the list of 150 albums for the ages of the Visions magazine, it ranks 75th
The band itself describes Hüsker Dü , Peter, Paul and Mary , Rush , Jimi Hendrix , The Velvet Underground and The Beach Boys as the performers by whom they were significantly influenced.
The album did not make it into the album charts, but later reached gold status in the USA.
