Susan Carol Schwab (born March 23, 1955 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician and business manager who was, among other things, a trade representative for the United States .

Life

After attending school, Susan Schwab studied political economy at Williams College , graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Political Economy). She then completed a postgraduate course in development policy at Stanford University in 1977 with a Master of Arts (MA Development Policy).

She then entered the diplomatic service and was a trade policy officer at the embassy in Japan . She then served on the staff of John Danforth between 1981 and 1989 , who was the US Republican Senator for Missouri between 1976 and 1995 . In the government of US President George Bush from 1989 to 1993 , she was first director general of the foreign trade service in the State Department and then undersecretary of state in the Department of Commerce ( Assistant Secretary of Commerce ).

After in 1993 in public administration a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. Public Administration) from the George Washington University was, she was between 1995 and 2004 Dean of the Faculty of Public Policy ( School of Public Policy ) of the University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP). In addition, she was at times a member of the Supervisory Board ( Board of Visitors ) of the Air Force Academy .

In addition, Susan Schwab also took on functions in the private sector and was a member of the Board of Directors of the gas company Calpine from 1997 to 2005 , of the stock fund distributor Adams Express Company from 2000 to 2005 and of the investment company Petroleum & Resources Corporation. At times she was also director of the corporate business development department at Motorola .

After initially serving as a deputy commercial agent between October 2005 and June 2006, she became a US commercial agent in June 2006 with the rank of ambassador in the cabinet of George W. Bush , of which she was a member until the end of his term in January 2009. In February 2008, the United States declared that it was interested in holding talks with the TPP members about trade liberalization for financial services ; in September 2008, Susan Schwab, in her role as trade representative, specified the United States’s interest in accession negotiations with the four TPP states, the first round of which has been announced for spring 2009. After her departure, she was recognized by her successor Ron Kirk , who said that she was "an excellent choice".

After leaving government, she returned to the private sector and has been a member of the Boards of Directors of Caterpillar and FedEx since 2009 and of Boeing since 2001 . She also became a Fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and was also involved in the Council on Foreign Relations .

She also took on a professorship at the School of Public Policy at the University of Maryland, College Park.
