Susanne Brandstätter

Susanne Brandstätter (born in Los Angeles ) is an American film director , screenwriter and documentary filmmaker who works as a freelance filmmaker in Austria .

Life

Susanne Brandstätter grew up in Los Angeles and studied art and French literature there. She continued her studies in Paris and also worked as an art agent and English teacher. In 1975 she moved to Austria after six years in France . In Carinthia , she initially taught English and French. She started working for ORF in 1983. Over a period of seven years, Brandstätter moderated the weekly live broadcast Krims Krams of the ORF Studio Kärnten in Klagenfurt , she developed the concept of the children's program and also took over its production.

From 1987 onwards she shot numerous documentaries for the ORF headquarters in Vienna , often for the ORF's religious department, including co-productions with 3sat , BR and ZDF . From this work, among other things, the production Silent Rebels - Muslims in China from the ORF series criss-cross came about in 2000 . This was followed the following year by the 70-minute 3sat production The Speed ​​of Being About Train Passengers in India. The film service commented : "A train journey through India (...), whereby the journey serves as a red thread on which encounters with fellow travelers are lined up, whose wishes, longings, insights and worldviews become transparent."

Susanne Brandstätter has been working as a freelance filmmaker and producer since 2002. In 2004 she attended the University of Southern California, School of Film and Televison, as well as screenwriting seminars with Syd Field , Robert McKee and Thomas Pluch .

Her first own production from 2003, a coproduction for ORF / 3sat and ZDF / Arte , Schachmatt - Strategy of a Revolution is a case study on American and Soviet foreign policy, described using the revolutionary events in Romania in 1989/90. For this documentary, which premiered at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam in 2003, Susanne Brandstätter was awarded the special jury prize at the Romy Awards 2005. This was followed in 2006 by the documentary Rule of Law - Justice in Kosovo about the work of an Austrian judge on behalf of the UN mission in Kosovo. The world premiere of the film took place at the International Film Festival Locarno 2006. This film received various awards, such as the Vienna Film Prize at the Viennale 2007.

In 2012 Brandstätter completed work on The Future's Past , a documentary about the life of young Cambodians in the wake of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal . The film was presented to the public for the first time in March 2012 at the Diagonale Festival of Austrian Film in Graz , where it was awarded for the “Best Image Creation Documentary 2012” (camera operator Jörg Burger).

Since 2012 Brandstätter has been portraying the gifted Anna, 12 years old at the beginning, and her family in the project Anna through Der Spiegel . Designed as a long-term observation, the project is in progress and not yet completed. In 2014 there was an 85-minute documentary.

In 2017 Brandstätter began work on a film about Donald Trump -Wähler in Ohio , entitled This Land Is My Land , an allusion to the song This Land Is Your Land by Woody Guthrie . The film should have its premiere in March 2020 at the Diagonale Film Festival in Graz. However, the festival has been canceled as a result of government measures to combat the COVID-19 pandemic . The world premiere took place as part of the “Rincón International Film Festival”, Puerto Rico from August 7th to August 14th, 2020 as a “virtual screening” via streaming. The film is scheduled to start in cinemas in early September 2020.

Since 2014 Brandstätter has been teaching documentary directing at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna , Vienna Film Academy .

Susanne Brandstätter has lived and worked in Vienna since 2006.
