action

Because his friend Suso died of an overdose, Cundo travels back from Argentina to his old Spanish homeland to attend the funeral. He is staying with his parents, whom he has not seen for years. After he and his three remaining friends Fernando, Mote and Rico organized a binge in Suso's honor, he discovered numerous sketches of a tower in Suso's house. Believing that the erection of this tower was Suso's last will, Cundo does everything in his power to grant him this wish. After initial skepticism, his friends help him. When the seven meter high wooden tower is finally erected next to Suso's house, it is torn down again by Suso's brother because he has inherited the property and does not want to have anything to do with his friends. Nevertheless, Suso (whose voice accompanies the film from the off ) is satisfied because his friends have now "seen the world from above".

reception

“What at first sight sounds like a buddy comedy actually turns out to be a melancholy, understated parable about the failure of human relationships. [...] All the more surprising that Fernandez lets his story suddenly lead to a happy ending. Peace, joy, pregnancy, the middle-class family as the goal of all dreams. In the end, the tamed machos sit around the table with their families. And one wonders why Fernández is torpedoing the cheerful, anarchic basic trait of his film with this bourgeois message. "

- Raimund Gerz : epd film

“It would be easy to describe“ Suso's Tower ”as banal, unoriginal and stale. Because at first glance, little happens in the 100 minutes of the film. Neither misunderstandings nor disputes or drinking are particularly emphasized. There are hardly any dramatic moments, the conflicts are subliminally portrayed and resolved, the whole film has a very casual, relaxed aura. That is not necessarily earth-shattering, stylistically also rather conventionally staged, but still true. Even if the numerous small conflicts resolve a little too amicably in the end, “Suso's Tower” remains a thoroughly sympathetic little film, full of precisely drawn figures and pleasantly inconspicuous humor.
