action

When John L. Sullivan IV, editor-in-chief of a news channel, learns that his ex-wife and best reporter Christy Colleran wants to hang up her job in favor of a marriage to multimillionaire Blaine Bingham, he wants to prevent it.

So "Sully" Colleran starts with a final story: The coverage of the imminent execution of the prisoner Ike Roscoe. He had shot a dealing cop in the affect and has become the plaything of politics, above all of heavyweight Roy Ridnitz. Roscoe senses his last chance when Colleran wants to conduct an interview with him and so unexpectedly offers him an escape opportunity.

Variation of a film from the 1930s

The basic structure of the plot goes back to the play The Front Page by Hecht and MacArthur, which was filmed for the first time under the same name in 1931 . Further adaptations followed, for example in 1974 as a special edition with Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau under the direction of Billy Wilder .

reception

The film wasn't a huge financial success. It grossed a good nine million US dollars at the box office in the United States .

criticism

"Moderate entertainment that can hardly be compared to the classic models, even if the story has been brought into the television scene in a contemporary way."

“Now Ted Kotcheff has ... taken on the charming material. With a brilliant Kathleen Turner in the lead role and excellent actors in the smallest, consistently type-appropriate roles. Only Burt Reynolds seems a bit out of place in his simple way of playing ... "

Publications

The film was released in Germany in July 2004 as a DVD premiere and again in 2008 under the title A woman stands her man . There were also German-language DVD releases of the film under the original title Switching Channels as well as Switch - A woman cleans up and The Order - The last order .
