Charles Kimbrough (born May 23, 1936 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) is an American actor and voice actor .

Life

Kimbrough studied drama at Indiana University in Bloomington , graduating in 1958. The following year he appeared in a production of Thornton Wilders Our Little Town at the Williamstown Theater Festival . After various theater engagements, he made his Broadway debut in 1969 in John Guares Cop-Out . Between 1970 and 1972 he played in the musical Company by Stephen Sondheim and George Furth and was for his performance in 1971 for the Tony Award nominated. From 1974 to 1976 he could be seen in the musical Candide based on the literary model by Voltaire with the music of Leonard Bernstein .

From the mid-1970s, Kimbrough also took on film and television roles. He joined 1975 and 1976 in three episodes of the television series Kojak - Kojak and had a small supporting role in the Woody Allen - Comedy The straw man . In 1979 he starred alongside Burt Reynolds and Candice Bergen in the comedy Auf ein Neues , followed the following year It's My Turn - I call it love alongside Michael Douglas and Charles Grodin . Several television films followed in the early 1980s. In 1984 he played in Stephen Sondheim's Broadway production Sunday in the Park with George and repeated his role in the film adaptation of the same name, made two years later.

In 1988 he got the role of anchorman Jim Dial on the sitcom Murphy Brown , which made him famous in the United States. The highly successful series had ten seasons with a total of 247 episodes produced by 1998. From the beginning of the 1990s he also worked as a voice actor in various Disney productions, including the cartoon The Hunchback of Notre Dame and its sequel. Since November 2010 he has played the Prince of Arragon in a Broadway production of William Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice , in which Al Pacino plays the Shylok .

Kimbrough was married to actress Beth Howland (1941-2015) for the second time . His son John, guitarist and singer of the indie rock band Walt Mink, was born from his first marriage .
