Sydney Joyce Van Scyoc (born July 27, 1939 in Mount Vernon , Indiana ) is an American science fiction writer.

Life

Van Scyoc is the daughter of postal worker John William Brown and Geneva Alberta Blanche, née Curry. After graduating from high school, she married US Air Force Officer Jim R. Van Scyoc in 1957 , with whom she has a daughter (born 1965) and a son (born 1967). She attended college courses at Florida State University in Tallahassee , the University of Hawaii in Honolulu , Chabot College, and California State University in Hayward , California . She has been a full-time writer since 1962. She was secretary from 1975 to 1977 and chairwoman of the Starr King Unitarian Church in Hayward from 1977 to 1979 .

In 1962, she published her first short story Shatter the Wall in Galaxy magazine . During the 1960s she continued to write other short stories. Her first novel Salzblume was published in 1971 . Further novels appeared until 1992. That year she ended her writing career and began designing and selling jewelry. She is now retired, works as a hobby gardener and has started writing science fiction again.

According to Dani Zweig, a book critic, growing up and human evolution are central themes in her stories. One example is Order: Nor'Dyren , where the two main characters set out to explore an extraterrestrial world. Tollen Bailey didn't get along with the post-industrial world of work on earth, but Nor'Dyren provided him with an environment that suited his interests very well. Struggling to develop a professional career, Laarica Johns flees to Nor'Dyren to escape her overprotective parents.
