Sylvester Grabe (theologian)

Martin Sylvester Grabe (born April 28, 1627 in Weißensee , † November 23, 1686 in Kolberg ) was a Lutheran theologian and general superintendent in Pomerania .

Sylvester Grabe was born as the son of the merchant Liborius Grabe and Anna Elisabeth von Otterau. He attended schools in Weißensee , Erfurt , Nordhausen and Quedlinburg and studied theology at the University of Königsberg from 1646 to 1655 . In 1655 he took over the education of the young Andreas Ernst of for several years Schlieben and Georg Wilhelm and Wilhelm Friedrich of Podewils and traveled u. a. with them to the Netherlands , London , Canterbury and Oxford . From 1657 Grabe stayed in Paris for two years .

In 1660 he received an extraordinary professorship for theology at the University of Königsberg, which he did not take up until 1662 after he had previously acquired the degree of licentiate at the University of Jena . There he was also appointed palace librarian in 1667.

In 1673 Grabe was appointed general superintendent in Pomerania . Because of the war there he was only able to take office in 1679 and was introduced to his office on the 1st of Advent in the Marienkirche in Stargard as the successor to Christian Groß .

He held this office for four years and then handed it over to Günter Heyler .

Sylvester Grabe married Sophie Behm, the daughter of theology professor Michael Behm , on April 28, 1665 in Königsberg . The marriage resulted in two well-known sons, the elder was the theologian Johannes Ernst Grabe , the younger the librarian Sylvester Grabe .
