Synapse films is an American DVD label founded and operated by Don May, Jr. Jerry Chandler and Charles Fiedler are co-founders and partners. The company was founded in 1997 with the aim of presenting horror and science fiction films in perfect digital quality.

The main focus is therefore on the restoration and video transfer of genre films that only received a very poor video evaluation , or none at all, in the past. Don May, Jr. had a lot of experience in the field of film restoration at his previous company Elite Entertainment - he was only a partner - and Laserdisc releases from Elite Entertainment were considered the best in horror at the time. This experience naturally benefits him and his company today.

Synapse films' catalog ranges from euro horror films and documentaries to Japanese exploitation films from the 1960s and 1970s .

In 2004 Synapse Films released the controversial thriller - a ruthless film on DVD . The release of the film, however, was no less controversial than the film itself. The notorious director Bo Arne Vibenius spread everywhere that Synapse films had simply stolen the film from him and wrote threatening letters, e-mails and faxes under false names. In 2002, Synapse Films bought Chrome Entertainment's worldwide distribution rights for $ 10,000. The reasons why Vibenius took action against the DVD label are unknown.

Synapse films works closely with other small US DVD companies. The Legends Of The Poisonous Seductress series was released in collaboration with Panik House Entertainment. Synapse films also helps Impulse pictures to bring their DVD videos to larger shopping chains via Ryko Distribution.

The from Detroit native filmmaker Nicholas Schlegel his documentary The Story Synapse divided into 4 parts on YouTube released. The documentation offers a very good insight into the genesis of Synapse films.
