The Syndicat des transports d'Île-de-France , STIF for short, is the authority responsible for planning and ordering public transport in the greater Paris area ( Île-de-France ), roughly comparable to a German public transport authority . It organizes local transport in and around the French capital and concludes long-term transport contracts with various transport companies such as RATP , SNCF and the private bus companies organized in the Optile Association.

The company was founded in 2000. The STIF is supported by the regional conseil of the Île-de-France region and the eight Généraux councils of the eight departments of this region: Essonne , Hauts-de-Seine , Paris , Seine-Saint-Denis , Seine-et-Marne , Val-de -Marne , Val-d'Oise and Yvelines .

Name change in 2017

Since June 2017 the organization has been called Île-de-France Mobilités .

Supervisory board

In 2013, the Supervisory Board had 29 members: 15 are delegated from the region and 5 from the city of Paris. All other departments each have a representative. In addition, there is one representative each from the Paris-Ile-de-France Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Association for Intermunicipal Cooperation of the Region.

The budget

Every year the STIF spends several billion euros in improving the local public transport in Île-de-France. In 2013, almost 9 billion euros were available.

The funds come from:

  • Public authorities (1.74 billion = 19.4%; including 1.20 billion from members of the STIF) as well as public subsidies for legally prescribed discounted tickets (e.g. for school and disabled transport etc.)
  • Versements Transport (3.43 billion = 38.1%): a transport tax payable by all private and public companies with more than ten employees
  • Passengers (2.73 billion = 30.4%): via ticket sales
  • Employers (0.85 billion = 9.4%) reimbursement of employee travel expenses
  • Other (0.24 billion = 2.7%)

The funds used go to:

  • RATP for Métro , RER , trams ; Omnibuses : 53%
  • SNCF for RER, local trains, trams: 32%
  • Optile , the professional passenger transport association in Ile-de-France: 11% for buses and school buses
  • Others: 4%

STIF takes over RATP vehicles

The role of the STIF was changed by a law of December 2009 (so-called ORTF law: La loi relative à l'organization et à la régulation des transports ferroviaires) with the takeover of the vehicles of the RATP (metro, RER trains, trams and buses) strengthened. In addition, STIF bears 50% of the costs when the vehicles are renewed. New purchases that become necessary due to route extensions are fully borne by STIF.
