Szczepan Twardoch (born December 23, 1979 in Pilchowice ) is a Polish writer.

Life

Twardoch's ancestors can be traced back to Upper Silesia for 350 years . He himself was born in Żernica, a district of the Pilchowice municipality in the west of today's Silesian Voivodeship and studied sociology and philosophy at the Silesian University in Katowice after graduating from high school .

Twardoch has published several novels and achieved a breakthrough among Polish readers with Morfina in 2012. In 2012 he received the “Paszport Polityki” literary award , the “Nike” audience award in 2013 and the Kościelski award in 2015 . In 2016 his novel Drach and its translation by Olaf Kühl were awarded the “Brücke Berlin” literature and translation prize. In 2019 Szczepan Twardoch received the Samuel Bogumil Linde Prize .

For the novel The Boxer , set in Warsaw in the interwar years , he asked the Yiddish expert Ewa Geller for help with his research .

Twardoch counts himself to the minority of the (Polish) Silesians and cultivates the Silesian language in his family . The novel Drach will also appear in a Silesian translation in 2018, although the written language has not yet been standardized.

He is married with two sons and lives in Pilchowice, as well as one week a month in his second home in Warsaw . According to the taz , he is "the most famous contemporary writer in his country". He also owes his popularity in Poland to the fact that he was the face of a Mercedes-Benz advertising campaign.
