Szilárd Borbély
Szilárd József Borbély (born November 1, 1963 in Fehérgyarmat , Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county ; died February 19, 2014 in Debrecen ) was a Hungarian literary scholar and poet .
Life
Szilárd Borbély came from a poor ("half-Jewish") family, and his father's grandfather perished in Auschwitz . He grew up in a village and after completing his military service studied Hungarian language and literature at the Lajos Kossuth University in Debrecen . In 1989 he became an assistant at the Chair for Ancient Hungarian Literature and specialized in Hungarian literature from the baroque and early 19th century. In his study A Vanitatum vanitas szövegvilágáról (1995) he examined the poetry of Ferenc Kölcsey . In 1998 he received his doctorate.
In 1988 he published his first volume of poetry, Adatok . Borbély named Kafka , János Pilinszky , Miklós Mészöly , Péter Nádas and Péter Esterházy as points of reference for his poetic work.
Borbély worked as a translator from German and English, including the authors Rumjana Zacharieva , Monika Rinck , Hendrik Jackson , Robert Gernhardt and Durs Grünbein . Most recently he prepared the translation of Klaus-Michael Bogdal's Europe invents the Gypsies into Hungarian, for which he was granted a “Paul Celan Fellowship”. He has received numerous Hungarian literary prizes, including the Tibor Déry Prize, Attila József Prize and the Füst Milán Prize.
His mother was killed and his father seriously injured when his parents' house was broken into; In Halotti pompa (2004), Borbély worked on the events poetically with references to familiar baroque forms. In 2013 he published his first novel, which, according to Borbély, is “biographically based, that is, limited fiction”. Borbély suffered from depression and committed suicide on February 19, 2014 suicide .
