Türkan Saylan was the oldest of five siblings. In 1957 she married and had two sons, one of whom is a graphic artist and the other is a doctor. Saylan also has two grandchildren.

Ergenekon investigation

Saylan was one of the main initiators of the great " demonstrations for the republic " that mobilized millions against the AKP government in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir in 2007 . The house search near Saylan, which was carried out on April 13, 2009 as part of the Ergenekon investigation, caused a stir. Following the search, Saylan, who was seriously ill with cancer at the time, was briefly arrested.
Saylan saw the Gülen movement , named after its founder, the Islamic preacher Fethullah Gülen , behind the events because it had campaigned for an education in a secular order. The opposition chairman at the time,
Deniz Baykal , commented on this as follows: If she wasn't sick, she would have been taken along, like the heads of the regional offices. Ms. Saylan gives scholarships to 29,000 students; it has given 36,000 girls an education. One asks oneself, why does it affect you, a person who is committed to bringing up a modern life? Does anyone have problems with the modern education project; should this be prevented?

At the time of her arrest, Saylan was in the last stages of her cancer and died shortly after the incident. The charges against their employees continued and ultimately resulted in a wave of trials against numerous opponents of Prime Minister Erdoğan and his allies of the Gülen movement .

The charges against members of the ÇYDD association were later dropped for lack of evidence.
