Talat N'Yaaqoub or Talâat N'Yakoub ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵜⴰⵍⴰⵜ ⵏ ⵉⵄⵇⵓⴱ Talat n Iɛqub ; Arabic ثلاثاء نيعقوب) is a rural community ( commune rurale ) consisting of several villages with about 8000 inhabitants in the Moroccan province of Al Haouz in the Marrakech-Safi region in the High Atlas .

location

Talat N'Yakoub is located on the R203 on the upper reaches of the Oued Nfiss at an altitude of about 1300  m . The villages of Tinmal and Tazalt , about 8 and 15 km away, respectively, are part of the municipality.

population

The local population consists almost exclusively of Berbers from the Goundafa tribe . They speak the regional Berber dialect but also Moroccan Arabic and a little French.

economy

Until well into the 20th century, the inhabitants of the Bergoase lived as self-sufficient farmers from agriculture, which to a large extent also included cattle breeding (sheep, goats, chickens); Retail trade and handicrafts also played a certain role. After reduced or no rainfall at all in the 1970s and 1980s, many men in search of work migrated to the cities of the north and support their families at home with cash transfers; At the same time, the income from trekking and hiking tourism in the High Atlas region has become of considerable importance for the overall economic situation in the region. The expansion of the R203 has also contributed a lot to the development of the mountain region.

history

In the absence of written records, almost nothing is known about the ancient history of the place. The Goundafa Berber clan, who immigrated to the Nfiss Valley in the 19th century, cooperated with the French colonial rulers and at times formed a regional counterweight to Thami El Glaoui's claim to supra-regional power .
