Tammy Bruce (born August 19, 1962 in Los Angeles , California ) is a conservative American publicist, author and radio presenter and high- profile lesbian feminist .

Life

Bruce grew up with her single mother in Northridge , a borough of Los Angeles (LA); she did not get to know her father. She graduated from Ventura High School in Ventura early at the age of 15 . She then moved to Illinois , where her mother's family lived, and began working there. In her late teenage years, she returned to LA, where she worked for the actress Brenda Benet (born August 14, 1945 - April 7, 1982; especially Zeit der Sehnsucht ) and with whom she worked with revolver until shortly before her suicide. Shot in the head also lived together. In contemporary news, Bruce has been referred to as Benet's personal secretary as well as the president of her fan club. More than 20 years later, Bruce revealed in her book The Death of Right and Wrong (2003) to have had a relationship with Benet. Around the same time, at the age of 19, Bruce had also been engaged.

After Benet's death, Bruce worked for the actor couple Gloria Loring and Alan Thicke . Then she began to work as a journalist; Among other things, she created electronic press kits and news videos that she sent to news organizations. She also booked interview partners for the LA branch of an Australian television station.

Later she was active as an advocate for the right to abortion (including as a member of Act Up ); In 1988 she joined the LA branch of the National Organization for Women (NOW) with the aim of combating blockages in hospitals that performed abortion . In 1989 she took up the position of president, which she also received in 1989 and 1990, making her the youngest president of the local branch. In 1990/91 she led a boycott campaign against Bret Easton Ellis ' novel American Psycho in this capacity .

In 1993 Bruce began hosting her own talk show on the radio station KFI -AM.

In October 1995, Bruce gained national attention with remarks on the then-just-completed murder trial of OJ Simpson . In particular, Bruce's comments in this regard on the subject of racism , which she considered overemphasized in the public debate, generated controversy and ultimately led to the national NOW board apologizing for Bruce in December of that year, demanding an apology from him and a reprimand granted. Tension between Bruce and the NOW national board continued to grow, and on May 6, 1996 Bruce finally announced her resignation from the LA NOW office. Together with Denise Brown, sister of OJ Simpson's murdered wife Nicole Brown Simpson , she founded the Women's Progress Alliance that same month and became its president. With the organization, Bruce launched a campaign in early 1997 to recall the judge at Orange County Superior Court Nancy Wieben Stock, who had granted OJ Simpson custody of his two youngest children. The campaign failed in October of that year due to a lack of signatures.

In the course of the Lewinsky affair , Bruce changed her voter registration status from " Democrat " to " Libertarian " at short notice .

On the night of July 8-9, 1998, Bruce attacked Camille Cosby, Bill Cosby's wife, on her KFI talk show , who had published an article in USA Today on the 8th about the murder of her son Ennis. Camille Cosby had alleged that the murderer Mikhail Markhasev, who had been convicted the day before, had a racist motive and claimed that America had taught him to hate African-Americans. Bruce attacked Cosby mainly because of these statements. She would also have contributed to the death of her son by giving him access to an expensive car. Bruce also accused Bill Cosby of having funded several illegitimate children from affairs with white women and secretly funded OJ Simpson's criminal defense. Bruce was suspended from KFI on July 10; On August 19 and 20, KFI broadcast a five-minute statement several times in which program director David G. Hall and station vice president and managing director Howard Neal apologized and revoked Bruce's statements. Bruce's contract with KFI expired on August 31 of that year and was not renewed. She defended herself legally and sued Hall, Neal and the KFI host Phil Hendrie u. a. for sexual harassment.

After joining KFI, Bruce began studying political science at the University of Southern California , where she received her bachelor's degree in May 2002.

In September 2000 Bruce emerged from the fact that she publicly defended Laura Schlessinger when she was accused of homophobia and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) operated a boycott campaign against the sponsors of Schlessinger's television show.

Her first book, published in 2001, in which she accused the American left and organizations such as NOW, GLAAD and the NAACP of curtailing the freedom of speech of political opponents with political correctness , was, with the exception of the ABC program Politically Incorrect and the conservative press ( National Review , The Washington Times and Fox News ) largely ignored.

In September 2003 Bruce first appeared on the Fox News Channel on Bill O'Reilly's program The O'Reilly Factor as a commentator; Since then, she has been an irregular commentator and analyst on this program and other Fox programs.

In October 2003 Bruce was on the transition team for Arnold Schwarzenegger, who was elected Governor of California .

In February 2008, Bruce changed her voter registration status from "Democrat" to "Decline to State" (an existing status in California that roughly corresponds to the status of "Independent" in other US states).

Bruce has been a dedicated supporter of Sarah Palin since the 2008 US presidential election . Since 2009, she has also appeared as a speaker at several tea party events .

In May 2010 Bruce was appointed to the newly established advisory board of the conservative gay organization GOProud . On February 12, 2011, Bruce resigned from this position.
