As a teenager, she enrolled at Stephens College in Columbia , Missouri, where she gained her first acting experience at the school theater there.

Her first professional engagement was at the Westport Country Playhouse in Connecticut ; she enjoyed professional acting training at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York City . In 1955 she was in Jonah and the Whale for the first time in a major play on stage. Grimes' breakthrough came in 1960 when she played the role of Titanic survivor Molly Brown in the musical The Unsinkable Molly Brown . In 1961 she received the Tony Award for her performance . In the 1980s she was seen in the hit musical 42nd Street .

Tammy Grimes' main field of activity was the stage: She was successful in numerous plays on Broadway as well as in smaller theaters. She was also seen in front of the camera in a few television productions and feature films, but without having played an all-too-well-known role. Already in the 1960s Grimes had her own television series, but it was canceled after six episodes.

Tammy Grimes was married three times. On August 19, 1956, she and the Canadian actor Christopher Plummer appeared in front of the altar. On March 23, 1957, Grimes' only child, future actress Amanda Plummer , was born. The marriage with Christopher Plummer was divorced on September 2, 1960. On June 4, 1966, Grimes married actor Jeremy Slate . After only 10 months, the divorce took place on April 15, 1967. In 1971 she married the composer Richard Jameson Bell.
